CHAPTER 12
- SNAKES IN THE PIT -

127 AC

Daenora did not leave Aegon's bed as she had planned to. The warm sun rays tickled her skin like the soothing touch of her mother, caressing her awake. The shadows of a sweet dream still lingering on her mind, the princess took one last, deep breath before opening her eyes. Her familiar scent of lemons and violets crept into her nostrils. However, the scent didn't belong to her. It emanated from what she'd believed to be a pillow until it rose and sank under her head.

The Dragon Princess startled fully awake at the movement. His arm which was still draped over her body like a blanket fell onto the mattress This was a disaster. She had fallen asleep. She had lain in bed with Aegon who was only her betrothed, not her husband. And Dany wasn't fully dressed either. If anyone would see them, there was no doubt they would assume there had happened more between them. It would not only taint her reputation, it would tear it to shreds and throw it into a hungry fire for the flames of her destruction to feed on it.

People would call her names, horrible names like they called her mother. A lascivious creature, a sinner, a whore. Princess Daenora was none of these things. Yet, when people wanted to believe something, they would.

Dany had barely jumped out of Aegon's bed, when she threw her discarded dress, which smelled unpleasantly of vomit, over her underdress, her corset and Aegon's shirt. Then, she silently peeked through the door. Her sworn protector didn't stand in front of her uncle's chambers, where she had last seen him. Ser Collyn stood on the opposite side of the hallway, his back turned to the door to the princess' chambers. As soon as he spotted her, he opened it and waved her over.

Quickly, Dany crossed the corridor, before slipping into her own rooms. She mouthed a thank you as she passed him. Supposedly guarding the princess' chambers was clever. This way, it seemed as though she'd been there all along. Sometimes the Gods were too merciful with the clever and faithful guard they had granted her.

However, the Dragon Princess' stay in her betrothed's room, his bed in particular, did not go undetected. As he had warned the little princess a year prior, there were eyes and ears everywhere in this castle. And they all belonged to the Master of Whisperers, who controlled each pair like a puppeteer their marionettes. The Clubfoot liked to think of himself as a spider that caught every event and every secret in its net.

Had the princess accepted his generous offer, he might have chosen to keep her secret to himself - naturally, only if Daenora Velaryon would have been willing to pay the prize. But she'd refused his services, much to his dismay. Lord Larys could have helped his little princess like he helped his queen.

The queen was willing to pay the price his knowledge was worth. With her, it was a fair exchange. She recognized and returned the value of his service and that was why he served her.
