It had been a few weeks, and after my first day of school, I fell into the rhythm of routine; waking up, getting ready, going to school, surviving my lessons, eating dinner, trying to finish homework and repeating. So far I hadn't had much trouble in my classes with my dyslexia since the teachers weren't making us write or read anything, but I knew that my good luck would run out. It always did.
"So, exams," my teacher finally said, bringing up the words I had been dreading. Apparently we were supposed to have started studying a month ago, but I obviously hadn't been here, plus I had missed a bunch of previous lessons. Most of the teachers had been giving me extra work to catch up, and I was trying to finish those, but...eh. To be honest, I had contemplated telling one of my teachers, or my father, it but I didn't want to be a burden or something. I mean I had been here for less than a month and already caused two fights. They weren't very fond of me, and I was honestly scared they would just give me to an orphanage or something. Also, telling somebody would mean I would probably be put in special classes, and the only people I knew were in my current classes, and I really didn't want to switch. So, I kinda just decided to suck it up and stay silent. It wasn't the end of the world anyway.
"Yo, can't believe that exams are this week. Time has gone by so fast," Pierre lamented.
It was lunch, and we were sitting at our normal lunch table. Pierre and Thomas were groaning about the upcoming exams.
"What 'bout you Lillia? You excited for exams?" Thomas gave me a grin.
"I've never really done exams. They don't do them for lower year levels in Australia," I responded.
"Well you don't need to worry, I mean surely you have the whole package! Beauty and brains! You're probably gonna do amazing," he reassured, giving me a small wink.
I swallowed. Brains? Beauty? I didn't have much of either, I don't know why he was expecting so much.
"I agree," Pierre said. "You're pretty and smart and I'm sure you'll do great," He has said almost the exact same thing as Thomas, but somehow the sentence sounded one hundred times better coming from him.
I felt my cheeks heat up and I smiled in response.
"Guys stop teasing her, or she'll explode," Clara smirked.
Pierre and Thomas rolled their eyes and went back to their conversation. Remi elbowed me and devilishly grinned, pointing with her eyes to me then Pierre.
When I arrived home after finishing school, I opened my biology textbook and started to try to unscramble the words that were moving and turning as I tried to read the page about... actually, I had no idea what it was about. I suddenly remembered my process for when I used to have to memorise something. Nina. I grabbed my phone and hurriedly scrolled to
find the familiar profile picture.
-Bestie Ninu-
Me- hey ninu i need a hand..
Nina - whats up
Me- i have exams.......
Nina- oh shit ok
My phone started buzzing in my hand saying that Nina was facetiming me. I accepted the call, and smiled as her familiar face filled the screen. She yawned.
"Okay, hit me"
For the next hour we went through everything that my teachers had set out, for each subject. I couldn't read, but I could remember things pretty well if I heard them once or twice. I recorded Nina reading the book on my phone, and saved it for later.
