"Stupid fucking Goblins. Stupid fucking raid." Yuka grumbled, his frustration echoing off the bare walls of the desolate basement they had taken refuge in. The basement, a gloomy sanctuary within a church, sat in the heart of a village now stripped of life and vibrancy. His companions, weary and battered, shared the cramped space, a temporary haven from their recent ordeal.
Their mission had been straightforward: intercept a caravan passing through the region. However, the plan had unraveled disastrously when goblins, cunning and merciless, had ambushed them. The skirmish was brutal, leaving them one member short and forcing them into a humiliating retreat to this forsaken place.
Sera, with her short blonde hair clinging to her sweat-drenched skin, methodically wiped the blood from her axe. "There's nothing we can do about it now," she stated, a hint of resignation in her voice.
Thrum, his usual vibrant purple drow skin now a shade paler from the ordeal, was quick to dissent. "Nothing we can do?! We should be out there, taking the fight to those goblins, not cowering in here!"
"And risk being overwhelmed? They're all over the place," Poru countered, securing his hair into a knot, his voice laced with pragmatism.
"Better than hiding, like a bunch of cowards." Thrum spat back, disdain clear in his tone.
"Stop," Yuka interrupted sharply, a new edge of alertness to his voice. "You hear that?" The skittering sound, almost imperceptible, crept through the walls, and an uneasy stirring seemed to emanate from the shadows, where only slivers of sunlight dared to reach.
"Are you sure you're not just hearing things? Maybe going a little crazy." Thrum questioned skeptically, not convinced by the noises.
"Eat a cock," Yuka retorted sharply, his patience thinning.
"Where exactly are we?" Sera inquired, her gaze sweeping the dim interior of their hideout.
Yuka could only offer a shrug in response. "Some forgotten village. It's not marked on any maps I've seen."
"Whoa! Check this out!" Poru exclaimed, his attention caught by a peculiar statue. He held up an artifact resembling a moth, its surface a patchwork of gold and silver, marred by cracks and signs of neglect.
The moment of distraction was shattered as the skittering sound intensified, echoing ominously around them, suggesting the presence of numerous unseen creatures.
Before Poru could react, a shadow lunged at him, dragging him into the darkness. His screams, chilling and desperate, were abruptly silenced, leaving only a horrifying gurgle in the air.
The fluttering of wings then dominated the silence. "Poru!" Yuka shouted, his voice tinged with panic and fear.
"Everyone, get ready!" Sera commanded, wielding her axe and shield with determination.
"What the hell is happening?!" Thrum shouted, his staff alight with a nascent flame.
"As if we have any idea!" Sera shot back, her stance defensive.
Yuka, gripping his dagger tightly, turned to Thrum. "Light up this place, now!"
Responding to the urgency, Thrum cast a spell, releasing a glowing orb from his staff that illuminated their surroundings. The skittering noises ceased momentarily as the light intensified, revealing not one, but a horde of monstrous creatures that had ambushed them.
The sight of the humanoid moth creatures caused a collective gasp among the group. A larger entity, more menacing than the rest, emerged, its gaze sending an icy dread through their spines.
"Everyone! Run, now!" Yuka's command sliced through the terror-stricken silence. Thrum reacted instantly, sprinting towards the stairs, only for a grotesque hand to ensnare his ankle, dragging him back into the nightmare.
Yuka and Sera could only watch in horror as the swarm descended upon Thrum, ripping him apart with a frenzied violence, opening up his stomach. His screams were abruptly silenced, his body dismembered before their eyes.
"Thrum!" Sera's cry was a mix of rage and despair. She swung her axe with lethal precision, cleaving through one of the attackers. Dust mixed with blood sprayed the air.
Yet her victory was short-lived. More of the creatures swarmed her, dragging her into the darkness. Her battle cries faded, leaving Yuka in a deafening silence.
Overwhelmed by shock and grief, Yuka collapsed to his knees, the swift and brutal loss of his companions rendering him immobile. Despair engulfed him, a dark wave from which there seemed no escape.
The leader of the moth creatures loomed over him, its monstrous form eclipsing Yuka's world. As its jagged maw descended, Yuka's vision was consumed by darkness.
