The start of friendship

"OWW-" I cry out in pain, the source of pain being from where I fell straight on my ass. 'Crap that hurts like hell..'

I look up in front of me to see a girl with pink hair scrambling to her knees as she frantically picks up a blue polaroid camera from the floor. I glare at her, "Watch it! That hurts, you know." I sigh as I pick myself up off of the floor. I get up off the floor, making eye-contact with Arlan.

He glances at both me and the pink haired girl before going over to the other girl and helping her up. "Y/n, March, are you both alright?"

'March? Is that what her name is? I guess he's already acquainted with her.'  I nod my head in response. My focus remains on the girl next to him.

The girl named March continues to fidget with the camera in her hands, soon after sighing in relief. She turns to look at Arlan, "Yeah, I'm fine!!" She sheepishly looks towards me, running one of her hands through her hair. "..Hehe.. What about you? I was running pretty fast, are you okay?"

I nod my head in response. "Yeah, it hurt but not too bad." I glance down at the blue camera in her hands, "Is your camera alright? Is it broken or something?" I walk closer to her to get a better look at the camera being held tightly in her hands.

She shakes her head with a smile as she holds up the camera for me to see. "Nope!~ I was a little scared that it would break when it wouldn't turn on right away, but it's all good!" She smiles brightly as she aims her camera in my direction, a bright flash coming from the camera. A photograph comes out of the bottom and she rips it out and hands it to me. "See?~"

I take the photo from her and smile. "I guess it really isn't broken then."

'This is taking a bit too long.. We can't just leave those guards waiting forever.'

I glance over at Arlan, "Me and Arlan were heading somewhere so we've really got to go now, but it was nice meeting you Ms. March." I motion for Arlan to follow me. He nods and walks over to my side.

"Oh, okay! It was nice meeting you as well.. Uh.."

"Y/n."

"Ah, yeah! It was nice meeting you, Y/n!!" The girl waves at me and Arlan before quickly running off once more.

'She was nice. Hmm, she's definitely the most energetic person I've met here.'

"Arlan, does she work here? Her clothing isn't really what I've seen the typical researchers here wear." I curiously ask him as I walk by his side.

He shakes his head, "No she doesn't. She works along the Astral Express- she's a Trailblazer."

He sighs, "You've heard of the attack on the station I assume? The Astral Express train usually takes occasional stops over here. On one of those stops, they just happened to come while we were being attacked by the Antimatter Legion. And I'm guessing you've heard the rest of that story from around the station."

I nod my head, "Yeah, it's what everyone's really talking about lately. But to think she's a part of the Astral Express.. I definitely wasn't expecting that."

We approach the Security Department, just about a block away. I halt to a stop. I can see a group of guards awaiting Arlan's arrival, I can feel a lump in my stomach starting to form just at the sight of all of them.

In amidst all of anxiety, I feel a cold touch on my shoulder. I look beside me to be greeted with a kind reassuring smile from Arlan. "You ready Y/n? If you want, you could just hide somewhere nearby and watch, you don't exactly need to be front and center when I talk to them."

I nod my head, "Yeah, maybe that would be better."

Arlan points to a hiding spot near the guards, "Hide over there. It's close enough to where you can hear everything clearly, and you could peek your head out a bit and still not be seen by anyone." He helps direct me to the nearby area, making sure no one sees me as I go over to hide.

"Alright, no ones going to see you over here. I'm going to go ahead and leave to go talk to all of them now."

As he begins to walk away from me, I call out for him.

"Arlan, wait!"

"Y/n?"

I hold my hands close to my chest, a large smile on my face. "Thank you. I really appreciate this, Arlan."

He pauses, as if he's taking in my appreciation. But that pause only lasts for a second before he soon after responds to me. "You're welcome, Y/n. Isn't that what friends are for?" He spoke those words with a smile. Though it was small, you could still see that it was there.

I watch as he walks away to lecture the guards that bothered me, his words still ringing through my head.

'Friends.. Having someone act out such kind gestures just because of friendship. Huh, that's new.'  Before I know it, these thoughts are making me smile all to myself. Instead of feeling a lump of anxiety inside my stomach, it's replaced by something much more warm. It's a feeling I've only felt a very few times before in my life, though I was much younger than I was now. Childhood memories.

I hear a loud prominent voice, causing me to look over to where Arlan and all of the guards are. I see a crowd of guards looking down at the ground or anywhere else but the person scolding them; the person scolding them all being Arlan.

I snicker at the sight in front of me. The once cocky and belittling attitude those guards have given me being completely wiped out now that they were facing an angry Arlan's wrath.

"AHAHA- Ah, those idiots!~ They deserve all of this and more for all of the crap they put me through." I cackle and roll on the floor at the idiots in front of me, enjoying every second of this.

I turn my main focus onto the stern and angry Arlan, attempting to compose myself and stifle all my laughter. I watch as he scolds them, turning angrier by the second. Despite the scene displayed right before my eyes, I can't help but smile happily to myself.

"Isn't that what friends are for?"

'...Huh. Even though I pissed him off so much, he still wants to consider me as a friend. I don't really understand it, being so considerate and kind to a "friend" that didn't treat him completely right in the beginning.'  I sigh as I continue to admire the mess playing out in front of me. 'Isn't that just a bit naive?'

As I continue to watch the commotion, I make eye contact with Arlan. He flashes me a small grin before he quickly goes back to scolding the guards in front of me.

"But still, having a friend like this; it doesn't feel too bad.." I mutter to myself, smiling like an idiot.

I watch as the group of guards disperse with their heads hanging down low. Watching as Arlan starts to walk towards my direction.

"Yeah, this is.. pretty nice."
