Chapter 1

Serena watched while the man put more logs on the fire. His muscles were hidden by the strange armor he wore, but she imagined what they might look like. His skill and knowledge was a mystery she wished she had time to figure out. She wasn't sure how she felt about him, exactly, but she owed him her life.

The Nazis were clearing the streets. Liquidating the ghettos, and shooting Jews on sight. She had been staying at a friend's store when she had met him, and minutes later, Nazis were spotted marching in their direction. Without hesitation, he had covered her star, led her to a dark, secluded corner, and kissed her to muffle her cries. Tears ran down her face, and when they had left the store, he had commented on how calm she was. It made her feel a bit better.

He sat down next to her, and put an arm around her, to help her stay warm. He was always hot.

"So, why are you here, American?" She asked. "You've never said.

"It's a secret," He explained, and she looked at him suspiciously.

"All secrets have a reason but no reason is not a secret." He gave er a confused look, and she laughed. "come on, you can tell me. It's not like I'm going to tell anybody. I'm all alone." He just shrugged.

"I was sent to...spy on the building of the concentration camps. Auschwitz Treblinka, and one that was destroyed. The General told me that I'm to give/smuggle/plant a copy of the plans to him, the Allies, and the rabbis in the camps so that, maybe, they can revolt and escape." She nodded with sadness. The names of those camps were equal with death.

"I was finding a way back when I ran into you." He lied.

"What are you going to do now?" The young girl asked. The man shrugged.

"I'm going to get you out of here, though. I promise." She gave him a confused expression.

"Why? Don't you have other-"

"Yes." He said simply. "But I will not allow those...animals to do that. If I can save one life in this war, I'll know I did my best.

Serena wiped a tear forming at the corner of her eye before he saw it. His answer broke her heart. If he saved one life, he would know he tried his best. Maybe he was lying, but she didn't think so.

Chapter 2

Serena was jolted awake by a man entering the clearing where they had been camping. Dawn was a long way off: Her watch said 2 PM.

"Can-can I help you?" The man was startled. He had not seen her.

"I'm sorry, miss." He said sincerely as he sat down at the other end of the fire. "I'm escaping the war. Don't have any money. Can't really fight for the Nazis." A red flag went up in her mind.

"What do you mean?" She asked cautiously. Her helper, Jason, was asleep, and she didn't want to wake him.

"I'm too old." He said, and her hopes of another ally dropped. "I would be out there right now, killing the infidels, and getting rid of that Jewish scum that's taken over our land." She hung her head so her hair hid her star. "Are you okay, miss? Is your friend sick?"

"No." She said without moving. "We're just exhausted. And he hasn't slept in four days so..." The man got up and walked his canteen to her. She took it, and used her other hand to hide the star. "Thank you."

"Did you hurt yourself, miss?" The man asked, and she shook her head.

"I'm just a bit sore, that's all." She wasn't lying. Well, not literally. The nosy man got closer.
