A New World

Your eyes flutter open, and while you expect to see light shining through your windows, you're surprised to find your room blanketed in the darkness of night. It's not often that you wake up feeling fully refreshed, but it's even stranger for you to wake up in the middle of the night feeling ready to take on the world. You sprawl out on your back and stare up at the ceiling, counting each stain and crack as you fruitlessly try to fall back asleep. You're faced with the reality that there isn't all that much to do at 2 am, especially when you have a family who would not appreciate you scurrying around at this time of night. In the end, you're left bored and wishing your body would leave you feeling this awake at a more convenient time.

"Hmm, so 7 cracks and 5 mysterious stains," you count to yourself. You continue to examine each imperfection in your ceiling before realizing the extent of your boredom to be this focused on something so painfully uninteresting. "I can't take this anymore, I'm going downstairs," you decide while slipping out of your bed and putting on your fuzzy slippers.

You tiptoe downstairs, keeping in mind the fact that your parents are asleep above you. You wouldn't want to face their wrath if you happened to disturb them, they weren't the nicest people when tired. Naturally, you first head for the fridge. The fridge light shines on your face as you take in your options. A bottle of ketchup, milk that expired two days ago, a single avocado, and some other miscellaneous condiments. "Looks like mom needs to go food shopping," you think to yourself as you sadly shut the fridge door.

You trudge back over to the staircase in defeat while your stomach rumbles in hunger, but as you make your way up the stairs, you can't help but glance over at the little door in the living room. Untucking your necklace from your shirt and fiddling with its key charm, you slowly descend back down the steps and are soon face to face with the door you had been so curious about. With your necklace still in your grasp, the silver key cool against your fingers, you insert it into the keyhole and slowly turn the key to unlock the door.

What you were expecting to find was a tiny room that could be used as storage space, possibly without anything inside of it. What you certainly weren't expecting to find was what was in front of you right now, a long tunnel that glowed bright shades of blue and purple, extending so far in front of you that you are unable to see what lies on the other side. "Am I dreaming? This has to be a dream," you decide in your shocked state. "But why does it feel so real?" you wonder as you place one hand on the coiled tunnel, its material soft and warm against your palm. You'd never been one to have much regard for your personal safety, often doing things others would consider risky, dangerous, scary, or just overall stupid, so of course you start crawling through the strange tunnel.

In no time you're at the other end, furrowing your brows in confusion as it appears you ended up right back where you started. Upon first glance, the room is identical to your living room, but as you look closer you notice certain changes that make this particular room much different. The first thing you take notice of is your mom's plants. What were once on the brink of death are now bigger, greener, and more alive than you had ever seen them. The wallpaper with curled-up edges is replaced by a nice shade of blue paint and every previous crack and dent is nowhere to be found. Even the water stain on the ceiling has disappeared. In fact, everything here seemed brighter. A nice change from the dull colorlessness of your real home.

Your senses are suddenly overtaken by the most delicious smell that's ever graced your nose. You can't quite place what particular food it originates from, but your hungry stomach draws you forward to find the mouthwatering aroma. With a rumbling stomach, you can't help yourself as you head towards the kitchen like a cartoon character floating towards the captivating scent. In front of you spreads the most magnificent buffet you had ever seen. Your eyes widen as you take in the scene of all your favorite foods and drinks there before you. If this was a dream you certainly didn't want to wake up.
