It was around 9, o, clock in the morning, and Izzy had come round to Lola and Jay's with Ben and Callum. Unfortunately, however, she didn't exactly have a beaming smile on her face. Instead, she had a straight one, which underneath was worried for the news that she would be told later on in the day.
Today was the day of Lola's radiotherapy. She had cancer, and it had the whole family in distress. In fact, nobody was smiling, except for maybe Lola. But everyone knew that behind that brave face was a frightened girl who was afraid for her life.
"These are for you," Billy said, hanging Lola a bunch of flowers, "Good luck... you know, with the radiotherapy."
"Thanks, pops." Lola smiled, tears forming in her eyes as she took the flowers from Billy.
"Hey, how you feeling?" Callum asked her, placing a comforting hand on her arm.
Slightly giggling, she replied,
"Like I don't want to come back glowing like nuclear waste."
Smiling sorrowfully at her, Callum told her,
"You'll be fine."
Izzy hoped that she would be fine, and on the outside, she made people believe that she did too. Despite this, though, she felt that deep down that the cancer might beat Lola, no matter how strong she is.
Bounding downstairs was Lexi, Jay not following far behind her. She ran up to her mum with a smiling face, as Jay announced,
"She told me I did her plait wrong, so she made me do it again."
Befuddled, little Lexi asked,
"What are the flowers for?"
This then made Izzy pop her head up, knowing that nobody had told Lexi about her mother's cancer yet. She knew that she would have to find out at some point, but as far as everyone else was concerned, she didn't need to know right now.
"There for me!" Jay lied as he took the flowers from Lola, "There's a shortage at the florist, and I needed them for a funeral."
Izzy then turned and looked at her brother's face. She knew that he was the person who least wanted Lexi to know about the cancer. And from the looks of it, he looked as if he had just let his guard down from making up an excuse himself.
"They're rubbish for a funeral. They don't have any lilies!" Lexi told him with no shame.
"C'mon then. Or we will have Mrs Reynolds on our back again for you being late." Callum told her as she grabbed her school bag, ready to leave.
Ben, Callum, and Lexi then all left to take the boisterous girl to school, and soon after, Jay told the trio that he had better leave to get to work.
"What, you ain't letting her go on her own?" Billy asked, surprised.
"Pops, I'm a big girl, don't worry. I'll be fine." Lola reassured him.
"No, I'll come with you." Billy insisted.
"Okay." Lola agreed.
She then kissed Jay, and then both she and him left, leaving Billy alone with Izzy.
After sighing from worry, he turned to her and asked what she was going to be up to today.
"Not much." She replied.
Thinking she asked Billy softly,
"She's gonna be alright, right, Bill?"
With wide eyes, he turned to her again and reassured her with a,
