"She's a mutt!!" I heard Peeta scream. He was talking about me even though I was out of his room. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. It was Gale. I closed my eyes, my chest burning. It would've been better if Peeta was dead. With my eyes still closed, I turned around slowly, into Gale and let him fold his arms around me. I didn't cry though. I needed to be brave. Gale squeezed me tighter, and I let him. Maybe Peeta was right that day at the beach. When we were still in the games, he said for me to have a life with Peeta. He said I could've and that it would be fine. Gale had always been there for me and I needed him. I don't know if I needed him as a best friend, or a boyfriend. Either way, I needed him. And he seems to need me. I hugged him back.
It seemed like only a few seconds until someone said, "Soldier Everdeen. We need you."
I turned away from Gale, not saying a word. I acted like nothing happened. And I walked with the soldier.
