My Name is Adam Carter, It's been seven years now since the incident at the orphanage, I was eleven years old when it happened. I was lying in bed being the only one awake while the other kids slept. There was a window above me that gave me a fantastic view of the moon and stars in the sky, it gave me a peaceful feeling but that was short-lived when I heard a scream.
The scream sounded like it belonged to Mrs. Dawn, as I got up to go check I noticed all the other kids were still asleep. I wandered out into the hallway and went around the corner and walked down another hallway. After turning the corner I see Mrs. Dawn sitting on the ground in front of a door moaning in pain. She had a deep cut on her arm and was losing blood fast.
She finally noticed me when I got closer, she looked happy to see me at first but then her expression turned into one of fear and worry "Adam, you and the rest of the kids need to get out of the orphanage now" "Why, what happened?" Adam asked her. "Howard he....summoned demons, he noticed I was watching and he sent them after me, one of them managed to claw my arm".
As Mrs. Dawn finished explaining something started to try and kick down the door she was sitting against. "Adam go get the other kids and get out of here now!" I didn't want to leave her behind but she wouldn't give me any chance to speak after that. "But I don't want to leave you h-" She cut me off " Adam just go now! While I can still hold them off and buy you some time".
I reluctantly turned around and started to run back to where the other kids were sleeping to wake them up so we could all escape. As I was running the building started to shake violently which made me trip and fall, I got back up quickly and when I got to the room where the other kids were there was a bunch of rubble that had fallen and blocked the way into the room.
There was no way I could have moved the rubble to get to them, the building was coming down fast and I had no choice but to leave them behind. I started to run through the halls trying to find the stairwell and as I was running I noticed a bright red light coming from outside. I quickly looked out the window and saw that the whole building was starting to sink into a red portal.
As I got to the stairwell entrance I saw that there was a group of imps blocking the way. Unfortunately one noticed me "Look there's one! Get him!", I ran into the nearest room I could find and locked it. I was trapped at least that's what I thought until I heard what sounded like a voice in my head say "Jump out of the window hurry!". As I ran over to the window an imp managed to bust down the door and tackle me to the ground scratching my leg in the process. The imp raised his claw in the air and I tried blocking it with my left arm, the imp slashed my arm leaving deep cuts as I wailed in pain.
I managed to kick the imp off of me and limp over to the window and open it. "Hurry Adam jump, trust us we'll save you" I saw no other options and jumped, I closed my eyes as I was falling expecting to hit the ground but then felt something grab me. I opened my eyes to see that I was flying, I tried to get a good look at who was holding me but I was starting to pass out. All I managed to make out was a purple glow, a pair of wings, a white bowtie, and periwinkle-colored skin right before I passed out.
"Poor kid, we need to get him somewhere safe right now" a soft male voice said " I know a nice foster home we can take him to, they are a nice loving bunch that will certainly show him the love he deserves, the poor boy and hopefully he can get those wounds treated " A female voice said.
At the foster home
"Hey, Jimmy can you take out the garbage?" The foster dad asks " Sure thing" Jimmy said as he went to the kitchen and took the bag out of the bin and walked outside then threw the bag into the trash bin. As he was walking back inside he heard a light thud and turned around to see someone passed out on their lawn looking badly hurt. Eyes wide with shock he ran back inside yelling "Guys come outside quick!" "What is it Jimmy? What's with all the shouting?" the foster mother asked as she walked out from the living room with her husband.
"Whatever it is, it better not be some joke" an irritated-looking goth girl said as she was walking down the stairs. "Someone's on our front lawn and they look really hurt" Jimmy said. "Diane stay here while I check it out" the foster dad said as he went outside to check. When he stepped onto the front porch he noticed the young boy lying motionless in the grass. As he got closer he was horrified to see the boy was terribly injured on his left arm and right leg.
"My gosh, what happened to you? Diane get out here there's an injured kid outside!" he yelled. "I'm coming Drew!" his wife said. Before she went outside she turned to the other kids and said " Violet go get the first aid kit, Jimmy go get the spare bedroom ready". The two kids obeyed and went off to do what they were told. Drew entered the house carrying Adam in his arms and headed upstairs to the spare bedroom. He entered the room and gently placed Adam down on it, Violet entered the room and gave the first aid kit to Drew and Diane who immediately started to treat Adams's wounds.
Jimmy and Violet left the room and then gave each other concerned stares. "Did you see the marks on his left arm? I'm honestly not sure that it was an animal that attacked him" Violet said " Oh don't tell me your gonna say the claw marks were from a demon right?" Jimmy said as Violet gave him a deadpan look "Seriously?" Jimmy said.
"Jim you saw those claw marks, my bet is that it was an imp" "Geez man you gotta lay off that demon stuff" Jimmy said. A couple of minutes go by and the foster parents come out of the room. "Good news kids, he's going to be alright" Drew said breaking the news. "If he has no one or no place to go to then he will be staying with us and in the meantime, he needs to get some rest and that goes for you two as well" Diane said as the two kids obeyed and headed off to bed.
Outside in the night sky
"Looks like our work here is done" A male voice "Now we should go give our report to the higher-ups, let's go" A female voice said.
The next day
Adam woke up feeling well-rested after that horrific night. He looks around and notices he's in a house and looks at the bandages around his wounds which still felt sore. He then heard the door to the room start to open and looked over to see Drew coming in with some breakfast. "Great your awake I brought you a nice breakfast" Drew then set the breakfast on the nightstand next to the bed. "So what's your name?" he asked "Adam..." "How did you end up here Adam? Did someone help you get here?" "well sort of" Adam replied "What happened?" Adam took a few seconds to reply.
"The orphanage, the other kids, all of it's gone..." Adam said somberly. "Oh, so you're an orphan?" Drew asked "Yeah I am" Adam replied. "What was the name of the orphanage?" Drew questioned "Better homes orphanage..". "Drew I think that's really enough, the boy needs to eat" his wife said, "Oh yeah sorry that I asked so many questions, I just want to help you Adam that's all, anyways enjoy your breakfast and if you need anything we'll be downstairs" Drew said as got and went downstairs with his wife.
Later that day: Adams's perspective
Later on, after I finished my breakfast I found out this was the house of a foster family. Drew and Diane looked up the orphanage I stayed at and saw all of the news headlines talking about how it seemingly mysteriously vanished into thin air. I didn't even bother mentioning anything about the demons because I knew they would think I was crazy. After all of that, they decided to adopt me, I wished that Mrs. Dawn could have been there to see it.
7 years later
I'm 18 now, I had hoped that the memories of that awful night would have faded away with the passing of time. But still, it haunts me, haunts my dreams, and the guilt still eats away at me, but at least I felt relieved knowing that I would never have to deal with anything like that again. Today was a normal day like any other, I was just sitting in my room listening to some music, China Grove by the doobie brothers to be specific. Until I heard a knock at my door, I opened it to see Violet " Adam I don't want to freak you out but there have been sightings of demons all over the news" and with that, all normalcy I had hoped to have for the rest of my life came crashing down around me into ruin.
