“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” Judge May asks.
“I do swear.” Alyssa sighs deeply.
“Miss. Grace, my name is Jamie Fox. I am the prosecutor for the state. Can you tell the jury about September 17th?” A man says standing up.
“I started the day normally, getting coffee, setting up my classroom, and spending the day teaching my students. I teach second grade, and we spent that day doing arts and crafts in the afternoon. Class left at three p.m., and I left around four thirty because I had to clean up the crafts. I went home, fed my cat, and after that I can’t remember.” Alyssa says.
“You can’t remember because you forced yourself to forget?” Fox asks.
“No. I have never forced myself to forget anything. I don’t even know how to do that.” Alyssa argues.
“Yet, you have. Right? With Theodora?” Fox pushes.
“Objection. Relevance.” Rosie cuts in.
“I’ll allow it.” May says, a sad edge to her voice.
“I never forgot Theo. NEVER!” Alyssa says shakily.
“Yet, you never mention her. Why?”
“Because, I blame myself for Theo’s death. I was sixteen when it happened, and losing the other half of you, it affects you, deeply. You can’t just get over it.” Alyssa says softly.
“Tell us about Theodora’s death.”
“Theo and I had gotten into a fight. About a boy. I admitted I envied her, and she admitted that she felt as though I got everything while she was left with nothing. I never knew. And I begged her to come back. I tried to apologize. She drove off, angry. And.” Alyssa explains sobbing.
“Please finish.” May says softly, handing her a tissue.
“Theo’s car drove off the road. It exploded. And I lost her. I lost a part of myself. And I have never been the same since that night. If I hadn’t been so pushy, she’d still be here today.”
“No further questions.” Fox says.
Rosie asks for a recess, since Alyssa was distressed. The judge grants it, and Rosie pulls Alyssa into another room.
“Lyssa, you alright?” Rosie asks softly.
“No. How is Theo relevant? Why do they feel the need to dredge up the past?” she sobs.
“Allie.” Jessie says walking in.
“Jes?” she cries running into his arms. “I’m so sorry.”
Jessie holds her, and gently kisses her head.
“Shhh. I’m not mad Allie. I promise. I’m still here for you.” he whispers softly.
“I just don't understand how Theo is relevant to all of this.” she sniffles.
“I don’t know. But I’m about to find out.” Rosie says, walking out the door to give them some alone time.
