Kiran
The cards didn't make any sense anymore. The three of hearts was nowhere to be found. The spades really needed to come up in numbers closer to one another. The five of clubs just got nicked by his opponent and his cards were falling out of hands in disarray no matter how hard he tried to keep them from falling out face up. He had an unsettling feeling that he was losing again.
Liu broke into his thoughts with a poke to his side and a nod which said "It's your turn, buddy." Kiran stopped clumsily fumbling with his messed-up cards and looked over to the stack of picked cards. Seven of diamonds. He glanced at his cards and noted that he didn't have anything to match with it. He carefully put his cards down, facing the bed, and picked up a fresh new card. Eight of diamonds. He had the ten and jack of Diamonds. He needed a nine. The tiny voice in his head huffed in annoyance. He placed the card down.
Liu's eyes brightened a little as she eyed the new card; He groaned internally at the loss. He should have known she needed that. She picked up his card and placed it in her set.
She let out a high-pitched squeak and placed her sets before him. Three sets of the numbers three, five and eight of each suit. Four cards from the Spades suit in order: Ace, King, Queen, Jack. She won again. For the fifth time today. Kiran wanted to throw his cards down. His cards were probably willing to oblige with the way they were already falling from his fingers. His right thumb desperately needed a break from keeping them in place. The girl sitting beside him bobbed her head in victory.
"Alright you won. Again." He sighed. He was tired of losing to her so many times. And in a card game that he had taught her! Rummy had earned itself a new enemy with him. he checked his watch for the time. Liu settled into collecting her cards. "I can't play more" He noted the way her slender fingers shuffled the cards. "Put it back. You need to eat your lunch."
She nodded a little absentmindedly as she kept shuffling the cards, her gaze locked on her hands.
"I need to go help a teacher with stuff. You should eat your lunch and go to class after ok?"
She bobbed her head in agreement, putting her cards in its box.
He gave her a pat on her beanie before getting up and making his way from the bleachers.
"Guys, remember to pack up soon!" He cupped his hand near his mouth and yelled at the basketball players. One of them flashed him a thumbs up. As he walked towards the school building doors, few other student waved to him. Some called out greetings which he politely replied to.
Kiran was the Student Council Secretary. Most people knew him. As the Principal said, he was everywhere all at once. Currently, he had to get to a Staff room to collect freshly printed test sheets. He was then supposed to put them in Mrs. Soama's class. If he hurried, he would have time to feed himself before lunch ends. Else, he could always just eat at home.
His walk in the staircase leading to the fourthfloor was cut short by a hand on his shoulder. Guess he wasn't going to eat on time today, somebody clearly needed his attention. He turned around to face a lanky figured boy with curly hair.
"Hey Kiran, can I take up a moment of your time?" He asked.
"Sure, Whats up, Saif?" He replied a little gruffly.
"See, Im the captain of the swimming team and today somebody left the team. We have a competition coming up soon too. Do you, by chance, know somebody who swims around here?"
By the thought of swimming, one person popped up in his mind instantly.
"Well..I know somebody but in a competitive setting.." He pushed his glasses up his nose. "I'm not sure she'll say yes though."
"It's fine," The other boy looked up at him with his eyes lighting up. "I can convince her, just tell me who it is."
Maybe he could give her the benefit of doubt. "Lyubov Belova, She's sitting on the basketball ground bleachers. If you hurry you might catch her."
"Thanks, dude!" Kiran watched as his body practically tumbled down the staircase as he left.
"No running on the stairs!" He yelled. Anyway, now there was limited time left for him to pick up the test sheets. He should hurry now.
He turned and almost jogged towards the staff room. He unlocked the room with his ID. Only the few members of the student council were allowed in the room. He got busy in counting the sheets in the stack left by the window.
"Heya Secretary!" A bubbly voice broke through his concentration. He realized too late that he left the door open. Cursing his irresponsibility, he turned back to face two students entering the room like they owned it.
One was a short blond boy with a look of mischief in his eye. Behind him, a taller girl entered looking a bit out of place. Locking eyes with the girl, Kiran completely lost count of the sheets in surprise.
"You got a moment, Kiran?" The boy, Chris, asked cheerfully. He grinned up at him with a grin that told him he was oblidged to listen to their woes.
Guess he was going to be late for his advanced calculus class.
