Dorian
Dorian was sitting by the pool, idly scrolling through their phone. Saif made the rest of the team practice laps around the pool. They had already finished their practice so they had the rest of the time off. They could have left to go home but today Saif made them stay. Being the vice captain of the team, he told them, it was his duty to oversee major developments in the team. The only major developments they would wait for is if there was a fluctuation of members. And they highly doubted that was the case.
The last member who dropped out the team was their bestfriend Anna, and she left only the previous day. It was highly unlikely he found a new team member on such a short notice. As they didn't have anything better to do, they decided to humor him by staying longer.
They glanced up, hearing the captain animatedly talk about the competition the team was taking part in soon. Saif waved his hand around, taking too much space for explaining about it. Sometimes even Dorian wondered why he cared so much about swimming. So much that he assigned them to be vice captain knowing full well the position meant nothing special in swimming.
They snapped a picture of him to meme on later.
"Alright guys, you can rest now!" He ended. Dorian checked the time, the hour was over.
"Wrap up." They instructed instead. The swimmers got out of the pool with grateful looks on their faces. The captain seems to be wearing them thin. They should pay more attention to their practice instead of using their phone.
"You up for one last lap, Dorian?" Their captain's voice yelled too close for comfort. A very wet hand plopped on their shoulder. They suppressed a disgusted wiggle, they had already changed into dry clothes. Without putting much thought into the action, they grabbed Saif's swimsuit and aggressively dragged him forward. This caused the boy's weight to displace and he fell into the pool. They regretted not thinking about it before, the water splashed up and attacked their leggings.
His head popped out of the water as Dorian let out an annoyed yell.
"I call this karma." He managed to stutter out in between gasps of air. He shook his head like a dog causing more droplets of water to fall on Dorian.
"I'm going to kill you." They fumed and stepped away from the edge.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to fool around near a pool, this is your own fault." He shrugged and climbed out of the water.
"I wouldn't have if you didn't make me stay this long."
"I told you why, I got a new member and she's supposed to come in any minute."
"The hour's over, kid." They skeptically checked the time. "I bet half my pocket money she dit-"
They were cut off by a door opening.
"I bet ALL of my pocket money she didn't" Saif grinned and turned towards the newcomer.
Anna walked into the room with a large smile. She was followed by a tall girl who nervously walked behind her.
"Sorry we're late, I can't keep time!" She explained cheerily. "Next time she'll come on her own." She motioned to the girl behind her. "This is Lyubov! the new member!"
"Where's my money, Dorian?" He asked as Anna pushed the new girl into the changing room.
"I don't get pocket money." They replied. "My parents believe in not monetizing chores."
"You couldn't have mentioned that earlier, buddy?" They shrugged. "You owe me."
"Alright kids, let's watch her swim!" Anna entered again.
The three of them sit at the edge, Dorian farther away because he really wanted to save the rest of his leggings. Lyubov quietly stood at the edge of the pool. With Saif's whistle, she started, albeit a little late.
She was quick, they noted quietly. Her form was pretty good even though she couldn't hold her breath for long. Even with her mouth rising often to take a quick breath, she was fast.
"With a little practice, she can be a star" the captain commented. Anna whistled in agreement.
At the end of her second lap, she stopped swimming.
"Would you join the team, Lyubov?" He asked. They anticipated her reply. She nodded slowly.
"Do I get a custom swimsuit?" She asked softly. They let out an anxious breath they were holding.
"Yes!!" Anna got up.
"Guys the building needs to close soon, we gotta go." Dorian called out. They made their way towards the door. "I'll tell the security to wait up." They walked out, the sounds of the other three excitedly talking trailing behind him. Truthfully, they could only hear the voices of Anna and Saif talking. They slightly regretted leaving the new girl alone with those two who could get loud.
"Hey loser!" Anna screamed in their ear. They flinched.
"Whatchya think of her? She's my new bestie!" She wrapped an arm around their shoulders.
"She's alright. Good that you're making friends, I can get rid of you more."
"Nonsense, I'm bringing her with us more."
"I think I'll prefer her over you."
"My gosh you're a bully."
"Report me then" They snarked.
"I will." She sniffed. Her face broke into a grin. "She likes you, I told her you like fashion and stuff!"
"Do you bring my name up everywhere you go? Can't get enough of me, can you?" They raised an eyebrow.
"Don't be ridiculous." She tapped their head. "It's about time you learn to be nicer. She won't like you like this."
"Fair." They sighed. "I'll be nicer to her only though."
"Such a bully." But she grinned at them.
