The Beginning of a New Adventure?
«No! No! And no again!» the girl complained, trying to hide under the covers, as if that would somehow protect her from the outside world.
«You're sixteen now. It's the age when all young people in Unova receive their first Pokémon. You know that very well. You can't skip this, you know!» her mother scolded.
«So what? What if I don't want to become a Trainer? The world would keep spinning just the same .» the girl replied, still buried under the covers.
«Do you think I don't know that? I've always seen you watching the battles on TV. You watched them with dreamy eyes, as if you were living through one of the Trainers. I saw you trying to predict their moves. And how you'd get anxious every time Ash battled. You called him "the unpredictable Champion" and then... after the battles, you'd daydream about what you would have done if you were the Trainer of that Pokémon. And now that you can...»
A mass of dark brown hair emerged from the blankets, followed by the face of a beautiful girl with blue eyes, a small nose, and thin lips.
«I knew mentioning that boy would change your mind .» the woman commented. The girl didn't respond. Who knows what she was thinking. Without a doubt, the girl, like almost every young person, Trainers and non-Trainers alike, had a lot of admiration and respect for that boy who, starting out with his Pikachu from Pallet Town, a small town in Kanto, had managed to become the world's strongest Trainer.
Of course, she didn't know his entire story. She only knew that he had traveled to various parts of the world to achieve his goal of becoming a Pokémon Master. Whatever that meant.
«Imagining something and actually wanting to do it are two different things. When you're just imagining, you don't risk getting hurt or worse. You know that perfectly well .» the girl countered.
«Did you think you'd stay here forever?» her mother asked.
«I just don't want to become a Trainer.»
Her mother shook her head as if to say she had no choice. «Yes, but I'm not a Trainer, so I don't see why I should become one.»
Her mother made a strange gesture. «You don't know everything about me. I was a Trainer once, too. Many said I could do great things, but then...»
The girl finally looked up at her mother. «But then?»
«I made a decision I regret to this day.» Seeing the curiosity in her daughter's eyes, who had now sat up in bed, the woman decided to start her story.
«I had just become a Trainer. I chose Tepig, the Fire-type starter. I also caught a Lillipup, which later evolved into a Herdier. We had won two badges. Everything changed when I met a strange man. He seemed like some sort of preacher or something. He talked about how, in his opinion, humans and Pokémon should live apart. I don't remember exactly what the group he spoke for was called, but I think it had something to do with plasma. At the time, I was your age, and I got swayed by his words. I abandoned Tepig and Herdier. Since then, I never returned home. I met your father, and the rest is history.»
The girl's eyes lit up, as if she had made a great discovery.
«Is that why this matters so much to you?» she asked.
«Exactly. And that's why you've never met your grandparents. In fact, they don't even know you were born, or that I gave in to that preacher's words, or...»
The girl nodded, signaling she understood. «So you want me to become a Trainer to fix your mistakes? That's not fair.»
Her mother shook her head and clasped her daughter's right hand between her own.
