The next several days went by in a haze of frustration for Wendy. Despite her best efforts, she found herself stuck in a loop of minimal progress and mounting unease. Peter's sporadic visits only fueled her discomfort, his apparent satisfaction with her compliance causing a gnawing sense of guilt deep within her.
Each morning brought a new wave of uncertainty, leaving Wendy feeling as if time was slipping through her fingers. She had a mission, a burning desire to expose Peter's dark intentions and free the children from his grasp. But with every passing day, her options seemed to dwindle.
This morning, however, was different. As the first light of dawn filtered through the trees, a spark of inspiration ignited within Wendy. She sat up in her hammock, a determined glint in her eyes. She had a plan, a risky one, but one that might just lead her closer to the truth.
The idea was simple: follow Peter. It was a strategy she was sure he wouldn't anticipate. If she could shadow his movements, observe his actions, perhaps she could gather the evidence she needed to expose his intentions. It was a dangerous gamble, but she was running out of time.
Navigating through the camp, Wendy crossed paths with her brothers, Michael and John. She greeted them with a warm smile, her eagerness evident. "Ah, Michael, John, just the ones I was hoping to find. Any relevant updates in the past few days?"
Michael responded, excitement lighting up his eyes. "Actually..." before John interjected with equal delight.
"Some of the Lost Boys let us in on a little secret," John said, his tone charged with enthusiasm. "Word is, Peter's planning to visit a camp on the opposite side of the island today. A camp you haven't seen before."
"John! I wanted to be the bearer of good news!" Michael chimed in, his playful tone concealing his mild disappointment.
"You always get to share the scoop first. This time, it's my turn," John retorted with a smirk, unabashedly enjoying the playful banter with his younger brother.
Wendy interrupted their exchange with a chuckle, her amusement evident. "Boys, boys, settle down," she said, shaking her head in mock exasperation. "Thank you for the intel, it's truly valuable. I wish I could stay longer, but I'll catch up with you both later. Stay vigilant and keep your ears to the ground in the meantime."
Both boys appeared slightly downcast, their connection with Wendy having been strained due to her recent endeavors. They shared a deep bond, nurtured by their shared loss—their parents having passed away tragically when they were young. Wendy had stepped into the role of a mother figure for them, and now sharing her with the other children on the island was challenging.
Despite their mixed emotions, pride for their sister shone through. They admired her dedication and determination, seeing her as their hero.
Sensing their inner conflict, Wendy continued, her voice full of reassurance. "I miss you both dearly. Remember that I love you beyond measure. Everything I'm doing, I'm doing for all of us and this island we now call home. I can't predict how much longer this will take, but we're racing against time. I need your unwavering support in this journey, because you both play vital roles. Keep up your good work, but prioritize your safety. Now come on, hug your sister, and wish her luck!" She ended with a warm smile, crouching down and spreading her arms wide.
Without any hesitation, both boys enveloped Wendy in a warm embrace, their enthusiasm palpable. Wendy leaned in to whisper instructions to them, which they acknowledged with nods. After a few heartfelt moments, they released each other. Waving at her, the boys dashed off, determined to carry out Wendy's requests.
