"Who is it from?" Jinae curiously looms over Haeun's desk, groaning with distress when Haeun puts the chocolate bar close to her chest, not allowing her to read the little note adorning it. "Stop that!" She leans back and looks Haeun up and down, an annoyed expression on her face.
Haeun laughs. "The teacher will be coming in soon. I think you should go to your desk, and I'll tell you who it was from after class."
"But Haeun...! Just tell me!"
Haeun gives Jinae a menacing look that screams 'go away', and so she does. Haeun smiles as she watches her walk away to the front of the class where her seat is, her smile getting a little smaller but lingering still as she looks down at the chocolate bar in her hands, silently gliding her eyes across the words written on the note attached to it.
How odd.
She wants to question it, but then again, there's nothing to question. Instead of thinking about it too much, or at all in any case, she stares at the note for quite a while, blinking as her mind is left blank.
you must like chocolate right?
...thank you for putting up with
what happened yesterday, haeun.
—jungwon.Haeun looks up for a moment, her timing just right to see a familiar lean, black haired boy entering the classroom. He looks so serene in the morning that Haeun just can't help but gape at him for a little moment. Never has she seen someone look more alive but dead in the morning. His ruffled hair contrasts greatly from his neatly ironed school uniform, and the disinterested frown on his face is inevitably obvious as he sets his bag down under their desk and sits in the seat beside Haeun, not sparing a glance in her direction at first.
And thank the heavens for that.
Haeun snaps her gaze away from the boy, realising how long she had been staring at him for. Had he noticed? Did she look weird?
Ugh.
She groans internally and shoves the chocolate bar into her bag, wondering what might be wrong with her to be thinking about such things. But she doesn't have much more time to wonder, because in that moment Jungwon turns to his side and begins speaking to her, making her awkwardly turn her head so that she is facing him too.
"So...did you get the chocolate bar?" He asks Haeun, a sweet smile on his face. Clearly he hadn't seen her chucking the said chocolate bar into her bag a mere few seconds ago.
She keeps a dead straight face, plotting something silly in her head as she notices the perfect opportunity to do so. Whilst mentally wheezing at what she is about to say, she tries hard not to actually laugh out loud. "I'm heavily lactose intolerant...and—that was milk chocolate..." She mumbles, staring at Jungwon with the most disappointment that she could muster on command. She watches with satisfaction as his face drops drastically, the smile leaving his face completely and his eyebrows furrowing together, a worried look washing upon his eyes.
Uncomfortably fidgeting with his hands, he suddenly looks very on edge as he anxiously sits up with a very upright and tense posture. He begins to nervously ramble very genuine apologies, not sure what else to do. "I am so so sorry, I really didn't know. I really am sorry, I shouldn't have done something like that without making sure first, I could try and—"
"Oh no, it's alright! I'm just messing with you." At this point Haeun feels bad for playing that prank on this boy. She didn't expect the popular, rich heartthrob to react so softly. "I actually love chocolate, so thank you. you didn't have to." She adds quietly, not able to hold back a small smile when she is able to clearly see the relief written all over Jungwon's face after she had clarified that she was joking. He looks as if the weight of the world had just been taken off his shoulders.
"Ah okay. No worries..." He mumbles, his eyes glued to his bag underneath the desk. The poor boy looks like his life merely flashed before his eyes just there.
"Is that so?" Haeun gapes at Yejin in disbelief as they slowly walk through the hallway, side by side and chatting away.
"Yeah! He has never messaged me before, but he did last night just to know your name! And it was so late at night as well..." Yejin dreamily reminisces, making Haeun scoff.
They are into their fourth year of being in a class together, so surely he would at least know her name? No. The bare minimum hasn't been met, but what can Haeun expect from someone so well known around the school like him? He must have too many other names to remember to even acknowledge Haeun's existence for all those years.
It still makes her a little upset though.
"How did you even get his number?" Haeun asks skeptically, highly aware of the fact that Jungwon would never, ever give his number to someone as clingy as Yejin. No such boy would, especially when they know that the girl is absolutely obsessed with them.
Yejin smiles at Haeun for a moment, clearly very happy about what happened. "Oh, it was his sister—she gave it to me just before the summer holidays started. Before she left highschool for good to go to uni."
"Ha, won't you look at that..." Haeun mysteriously mumbles, more to herself than to anyone else. Well, Yejin would say that it was mysterious, because Haeun knows exactly what she means. Of course even his sister knows about Yejin's ever so slightly obsessive feelings for Jungwon. How could she not know when practically everyone knows?
Yejin opens up her mouth to ask Haeun what she could possibly mean by her vague statement, but instead of speaking words she lets out a squeal as she backs away from Haeun who has suddenly been splashed by a liquid that smells very much like an energy drink.
Haeun stands there with her head down for a good few moments, trying to process what has just happened in that split second, whilst everyone around her, including Yejin, pause to look up at the balcony hallway above her where the mysterious drink had come pouring from. There stand two boys, one clearly telling off the other by constantly pointing to the now empty Lucozade bottle that he is grasping in his hand.
The names Heeseung and Sunghoon are slowly but surely being hummed around the hallways now, mixed into the whispers and chitter chatter of the students who had just witnessed what happened.
Haeun doesn't even bother looking up at the balcony. She storms off to the nearest girls toilet, trying not to burst out crying over her soaking, sticky, sugary scented hair, and planning to wait in those toilets for a good while whilst begging her parents to come and pick her up.
Yejin watches her leave, distraught at the scene that had just rolled out before her. "What is wrong with you?!" She shouts eagerly at the balcony, shushing the whole hallway for a moment. She sticks up the finger to a now apologetically staring Sunghoon, before leaving swiftly, trying to follow behind Haeun who was already long gone behind the toilet doors.
