I direct my gaze upwards and stare in awe at the magnificent figure looming above me like a water tower. I've never felt so small. Our eyes meet and time comes to a standstill, his pupils dance like pill bugs floating in a bowl of warm milk. "How can I ever repay you?" the words drip from my mouth, the same mouth that was puking just moments ago.
He laughs, a bellowing laugh that can be heard from miles off, yet I am the only one brave enough to stand in it's path. He turns to me, lifting my chin with the localized strength of his freshly shaven index finger, "Just enjoy the show," he winks. Heat courses through me, visiting parts of my body I never even knew I had. The lanky figure turns to walk away but pauses in his stride. "Oh," he looks back, "and try not to hurl this time," he grins, pivoting away from me and disappearing into the shapeless mob.
I stare ahead, utterly dumbfounded and frozen in place. Who was that boy? I trace my lips with the pad of my shapely thumb, a certain warmness radiates from the area where his hand once rested. I wonder if I'll ever see him again, I smile, but I am not left to ponder these thoughts for long.
"Y/n!" A hand grabs my shoulder and whips me around.
"Marie!" I clutch the patch of surgically altered skin located directly above my pacemaker, "I told you, you can't scare me like that! What if I had another heart attack?" I scold.
Marie looks down, "I'm sorry," she whispers. Her shoulder twitches and I watch as a single tear drop descends the slope of her highly positioned cheekbone before pooling into the village well that is her dimple. Ashamed, I look away. I've hurt her.
"Hey," I look up at my long-bodied friend, "it's completely okay to mess up sometimes. Mistakes are a huge part of what makes us human. Over 366 million Americans are diagnosed with ADHD and do people say they're not Christ-like? No. So why would I say the same about u?" I push a lock of hair behind her misshapen ear.
"Really?" She sniffles.
"Really," I grin. "Now come on, we need to get going!"
"But why?" She asks.
I look back at my best friend, "Because, Best Friend, we've got a show to catch!"
