There were no words exchanged. No talking. Just watching."What?" I repeat again. "Common have you seriously never seen someone drink before?" A chuckle came out from between my lips. What did they expect me to be? And softie? A goodie two-shoes? Hell no. Living with my uncle almost my entire life, taught me well. Never show weakness..... and learn how to tolerate your alcohol. Anyways!! As I watched their movements, I could see the growing feelings in their eyes. But that nice, calm, touching feeling was taken away quickly as the bottle of tequila was ripped from my grasp.
"What the hell do you think your doing?!" As I looked at the liquor thief, I saw one of my older looking brothers, whose name I couldn't remember. He must have seen the confused look in my eyes as he spoke again to clarify. "The alcohol. Your under age. Do you know how illegal that is in Korean?!" Honestly, I was eighteen. It was still illegal for me to drink in Canada, but did that ever stop me? Hell no. But who ever really followed those rules? Well maybe these people I guess. I just shrugged my shoulders at him and looked calmly into his eyes.
Now, some people might say that I have a resting bitch face. And I can't really argue with them. A lot of people either at school or even just while is used to walk around the town, they would purposely go out of their way to not walk by me. Worried about what I might have done to them if they looked at me the wrong way.
As I looked into the males gaze, I could see his face twitch. As he made eye contact with me, he quickly broke it. If out of fear or discomfort, who knows? But I wasn't really like that. When a person really took the time to get to know me, they would see that I'm nothing like what others think. I'm actually a very caring and nice person.
"Wait. what was your name again?" I asked. really hoping that he didn't take it offensively. But in fact, it was quite the opposite, as he just started to laugh at my question. I raised an eyebrow at him and he must have seen the confusion written all over my face. as his laughs slowly, can to a stop, he looked back up at me before looking behind him, making eye contact with my dad, well our dad.
"Wow, she is exactly like mom," the mention of our mother made me feel sad. I hadn't known her. Guessing the ages of all the men in front of me, I would say they had a good five years or so with her. Me on the other hand, I was given away as a baby, after she had died.
"What was she like?" It was a question I always wanted the answer to. Even though Lilith was very close with my mom, she refused to talk about her, or anyone else in my family for that matter. I knew nothing, I had been kept in the dark all these years and only now finding out the truth. But as I looked around the room at all the faces, some now more familiar than others, I could see the look of sadness covering most of their faces. Though, as the man that was still stood in front of me, looked back in my direction, I could see a small smile adoring his lips. I guess at the mention of our mom, it could have brought up some old memories. Memories I didn't have, and wouldn't be in.
But instead of him answering like I had imagined. My dad beat him to it. "She was absolutely amazing. The most brilliant and beautiful woman I had ever met. She loved you so much bean. Even though she only knew you for a short period of time." He looked down, instantly finding the floor more interesting that looking me or anyone else in the room for that matter, in the eyes. But what he had said. She knew me? She met me? Lilith had told me that my mom had died during child birth. Was that a lie?
"Wait, what do you mean she knew me?" I asked, I was now very confused. But I didn't get an answer. My fathers head was still down casted. His eyes being the only thing out of sight from where I was standing. I placed the bottle of tequila down on top of the wooden bar and spoke again. "Dad?" That word. I hadn't called him dad yet. And it seems like everyone else had noticed it as well because I could see my fathers sad, guilty face, turn into one of laughter and pride. But I just waited for his answer.
"Your mom, she...she was killed when being hunted. Their were bad people coming after you, they wanted to take you from us, from her. And so she ran. I didn't know where she was. Lilith. Your moms best friend, she had called me last night and said that she knew where you and your mom were. You guys were deep inside a forest not to far from here. But that night. When I got there. Your-your mom, she was uh. She was laying against a tree, dead. And you were no where in sight, neither was Lilith. After that I never heard from her again." I was shocked to say the least. Millions of questions flying through my head at once. She was killed? Their were bad people who wanted to take me? Why? For what? And Lilith. She, she knew about my family. She knew how my mom really died, but she never told me. Before I knew it, a single tear had made its way down my left cheek. Slowly moving it's was down, until it curved in by my chin. My mom had died protecting me.
As I looked back up, I noticed all eyes on me. No one had spoken, there was pure silence. As I scanned each of their faces, I could see the sadness and discomfort written all over them. Clearly they don't like to bring this topic up. I don't blame them. They knew here. I didn't, at least from my memory. But they were all old enough to remember her. And so that also meant they were old enough to remember losing her. It must have been hard. I had never really given much thought to it, seeing as though Lilith had told me that my mom had died during child birth.
"Lilith" I spoke. "She told me that mom had died during child birth" at this point I had numerous more tears rolling down my cheeks. "Wait" my dad said "you know Lilith?" He looked like he was in shock. He knew she had taken me, what did he think she just left me on my uncles door step and said see ya later? "Ya of course I did. She was always there for me" they had seemed to pick up on my usage of the pass tense.
"Was?"
"Did?"
Two of my brothers spoke. One I recognized as Felix, and the other I couldn't remember his name. But he had short black hair, and was extremely built. I slowly let my gaze travel to the floor. Me now finding it fascinating. "Bean, what do you mean was?" My father asked, a hint of unsure and confusion coming from him.
"She was there with me my entire childhood. Even though i was with my uncle, I would spend all of my holidays and free time with her. That was until she disappeared." Another tear made its way out of my eyes. "A couple of years ago, she went missing. And since then, I never saw her again.
