Colorado awoke from the armchair he dozed off in, to the sound of faint singing in the distance. He decided to head outside to see where the soft crooning was coming from, and if it was coming from Dude (Colorado's fellow deputy, and friend). Colorado steps out the back door of the Town's Jail, where he and the Town's Sheriff and Deputies stay. The sun was sitting low on the horizon, shining bright, soon about to set. Colorado spots his friends.
Sheriff Chance, around the age of 50, he takes his job very seriously, and doesn't let any crimes or bad things happen, because he fights for everything to be right and for everyone to be safe. He may seem like he doesn't really care about people, but when you see his soft side, you realize he's got a kind, loving, and loyal heart.
Stumpy, an old crippled man who always tries his best to help Chance out as much as he can, despite his condition. He's usually guarding the jail, but is happy to help out in other ways too. He isn't afraid to speak his mind. If he doesn't like something, he will most definitely say so.
Dude, one of Sheriff Chance's Deputies. He's about 40 years old. He's more quiet and doesn't like to share too much about himself. He is a little unpredictable, but that's because he's an alcoholic. Despite him being an alcoholic, you can tell he is sweet and caring and is very smart and a little witty. Although, he is sometimes selfish. He's ashamed of his addiction, and is underestimated by others, but he proves them wrong all the time, because he is good at his job and is actually very smart. He always wants the Town to be safe without crime, just like Sheriff Chance.
Colorado is a young boy around the age of 20 that recently became another one of Sheriff Chance's deputies. His original Sheriff was shot in front of the Saloon one night. Colorado was left without a Sheriff and wanted to help out more than anything to deal with the crimes of the town.
Once he proved himself to Sheriff Chance, Chance took Colorado under his wing and let him be his other deputy.
Colorado wanders over to his friends, who were all seated by a campfire. He takes a seat on one of the wooden benches placed around the fire. Dude was still crooning away when Colorado walked up, and Chance and Stumpy were enjoying it. Dude finished the sweet and peaceful melody that he often sang. Both Stumpy and Chance with big smiles from Dude's peaceful and gorgeous singing.
Sheriff Chance spoke up," Hey Colorado! I was talking with Dude, and he and I were thinking that he should tell you his story and history. I think it'd be good for you to hear what he went through, so you can understand him better and because it's a good story for a young deputy like you to hear. He hasn't shared it with anyone other than Stumpy and I because we witnessed it all, but he's willing to share it with you because it'd be good for you to know it."
"I think that's a good idea! It'll be nice getting to know Dude better, especially because we will be deputy partners for a long long time!" Colorado said to Chance.
"I hope you're ready for this," Dude reminded Colorado.
The light from the fire's flames danced upon their faces as Dude began to tell his story...
I was in my late 20s and had recently gotten married to the most beautiful woman in the town. She was as gorgeous as the setting sun over a lake on a breezy Autumn Evening. I loved her with all my heart and didn't want to be with anyone else, but her. I was Chance's deputy then, the same as I am now. We've been partners since I was a young adult. One night Chance told me to go to the Saloon to keep an eye out for the criminals we were after at the time. As I sat down at an old wooden table with a drink in hand to try and blend in, I overheard a conversation between two men sitting at the table across from me. They spoke in a hushed manner, but I was still able to hear them. They spoke about boarding a train that was carrying lots of riches and passengers, that was setting off in about a week. I thought I heard them say something about smuggling dynamite onto the train to help them to detach the passenger train cars from the train containers that were transporting all the riches. I wanted to rise out of the old rickety chair that I was seated in, and race over to the Jail to tell Chance about what I heard, but I didn't want to draw attention to myself and have the two guys know that I was listening. I waited until they left, and then I ran back to the Jail to talk to Chance. I told Chance about everything I overheard in the bar that evening. He told me that he and I need to follow the train that day even if it wasn't going to actually happen. He wanted the passengers of the train to be safe and he wanted him and I to stop the men from boarding the train to prevent any crimes from occurring and people getting hurt.
