The next day, after breakfast, Oma and I decided to go shopping for food in town.
We were walking along the streets of town and Oma needed to buy some meat from our local butcher. Along the way, some girls will squeal and snap a picture of me as they walk pass. As usual, I just smiled and bowed slightly.
"Ah here it is." She says while pointing to the store in front. I open the door for her and a bell sound rang. Just then, I felt chills down my spine as time slew down. From the corner of my eyes, a girl walks pass me. She had a light chestnut hair colour that was straight but curled towards the end. She turns into a corner and walks in.
"Oma, I'll be back in a while." I say quickly before running off.
I was looking frantically for her and finally saw the girl walking in front. I slip in between the crowd as I push them gently aside. Why does this girl make the butterflies in my stomach flutter? Could it be? I was finally right behind her. I reach out my hand to touch her shoulder but she suddenly dashes forward into the traffic which was blinking the green men. I wanted to chase after her but it already turned red before I know it. From afar, I watch her figure disappear into the alleyways.
Was I being delusional or was I expecting too much?
After I came back to the butcher shop, mom was waiting outside for me. She hits my shoulder for leaving her. I immediately tug on her arms while smiling cheekily. We went home after shopping and she prepared our dinner. I waited while writing song lyrics on our couch.
After dinner, I brought mom to the beach where it's especially beautiful at night. We were strolling along the coast line with the beautiful sound of crashing waves.
"Ah, tomorrow will mark a new year for us." She says, stopping to get a good view of the sea.
I followed her and hid my hands in my pocket. "I can't even believe how time flies. So many things happen this year."
Oma then turns around and cups my face. She knew what I meant. "Sometimes, it takes a lot more strength to hold on then to let go." I took a minute to absorb what she just said.
"I'll be waiting in the car. You go take your time now." She says while trailing off. I faced the sea again and crouched down to feel the sand in my hands.
This is where Suyoung kissed you.
Her precious smile kept appearing in my mind. I fought back the tears as they sting my eyes. What Oma said was true; I was weak. For 7 months now, I didn't have the strength...the courage to let her go. My hopes were still high thinking she would come back to me. All I was doing was putting me in a day dream that will never come to life anymore.
I stand up as the sand slips through my fingers.
"Happy New Year, Suyoung." I whisper and inhale a deep breath.
"I'll let you go now."
