Hogwarts was pleasant. It didn't have the elegance or class of Beauxbatons, but you had fun watching the much freer students and the feud between the houses, plus the chaotic energy that the castle seemed to exude, with moving stairs, gossiping pictures and ghosts of all kinds. It wasn't exactly the school environment you were used to, but it made you sure it was going to be a fun year.
Cho had written about the school in letters she sent you, but no description came close to actually being there. The two of you were childhood friends, your parents were lifelong friends, and you always vacationed together, so you were excited to be able to be with her at school too, even though she was going through her post-breakup period, and you got the feeling she wouldn't exactly be the most lively company for the next few weeks. Poor Cho, you thought, left without explanation after six months of dating, the guy must be a jerk.
"Does anyone have lipstick?! It's an emergency!" One of the girls at the front yelled.
You were one of the last in line to enter the Great Hall, your and your colleagues' hearts racing with the nervousness of the performance, all of them compulsively checking the alignment of their uniforms. Behind the big wooden door, You could hear the excited conversations of the Hogwarts students, all already seated and waiting for the moment of the announcement.
The pressure on you was enormous, the few students chosen, the only ones considered good enough to compete for a spot in the triwizard tournament, the chance to represent the school. Your parents hoped you would make it, even if you doubted that you would. The truth is that the goblet of fire would know of your lack of interest in competing, and the opportunity would probably be given to a student much more enthusiastic about the idea, such as Fleur who maintained her perfect posture and unreadable face. You were friends, but sometimes it was hard to think she wasn't a robot.
"I need to breathe" You said to one of the classmates in front of you, feeling your uniform too tight and your heartbeat speeding up quickly. You didn't want to let anyone down that night, and panic was starting to set in "I'll be right back."
"You can not!" She held you, preventing you from getting out of position "Madame Maxime said to wait ready, she will be back soon."
"I won't be long. I need air, just for a minute" You pulled your arm back hard and ended up losing your balance when she actually let go of you. The unnecessary momentum caused your legs to take two steps backwards in an attempt to regain your balance, which was enough for you to bump into the person running past you, trying to make it to dinner in time.
With the collision, the two of you fell to the cold stone floor, your upper body taking the softened fall on the other person's body, where you rested your head on what you felt was their chest. You couldn't help but worry if your uniform got dirty. Madame Maxime would kill you if so.
"Ah!" You moaned from pain, feeling you had felt with the weight on your hand, and then sat up gripping the hand with the other to apply pressure. You mentally cursed yourself, you couldn't hurt yourself and ruin the performance. They would send you back to France on foot.
"I'm sorry!" You first heard the voice of the other person you knocked down and realized it was a boy, but you still hadn't opened your eyes, you were too focused on trying to control the pain, too focused even to be embarrassed that you had been lying on top of him a few seconds ago "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. It was my..." You finally looked to the side, meeting the worried eyes of the boy lying next to you, which along with yours slowly changed to surprise as the world around you gained colour, allowing you to see with even more clarity how handsome he was. Possibly the most handsome man you've ever laid eyes on.
You'd heard stories about things like that, not all soulmates were that lucky, some don't connect right away, but for some… That's exactly what was happening. It was a rare phenomenon, what many people confuse with love at first sight, is the connection between the souls coming out immediately, and it's as if life without the other had never existed, as if they had always been there.
