Norman was up and gone when I woke up the next morning. I sat there for a couple of minutes trying to decipher whether he was actually the kind of guy he showed the world. Bedrooms usually defined the kind of person that lived in them. As I looked around the four bright white walls I realized he was exactly like the guy everyone pegged him to be. Just as I was about to get up, the door slowly opened and there was Norman with a cup of coffee halfway up to his lips.
"About time, Em. Thought you'd died on me or somthing." he chuckled. I rolled my eyes and got up to start making his bed.
"Oh nah, I'll take care of that later. Come have breakfast- I did not spend half an hour trying to make pancakes just so you'd let them turn cold."
My mood instantly spiked when I heard him say pancakes.
"Mmmm Normaaan." I moaned. Norman turned around and gave me a weird look. After I finished swallowing the last bit of pancakes, I managed to let out coherent words.
"You just learned how to make them?" Norman chuckled and shook his head.
"Nah, but I figured it would be more impressive if I said I did and they came out great the first time."Just as I was about to reply, I heard my phone ringing from the bedroom. Immediately I sprang up and ran to get it.
"Hello? Emily?" my mom's voice said from the other line.
"Hey..mom" I muttered. Since the last time we spoke, she was kind of upset that I wouldn't be able to make it home for Thanksgiving.
"Sweetheart, you sound out of breath, are you okay?" she asked.
"Yeah mom, I'm fine. What's up? I miss all of you." I hadn't seen my parents in almost 3 months. I missed them just as much as they missed me. It got a little lonely being out here on your own without anyone to really talk to.
"Well honey, you won't have to miss us for much longer! I was calling to tell you we bought tickets to go see you in New York for Thanksgiving!"
"Oh mom, that's great! I can't wait to see you guys!" I was genuinely happy with her little suprise. Things were starting to look up.
" We can't wait to see you either pumpkin- I have to go now though, I'll text you the details later. I love you sweetheart!"
"Love you too! Bye!" I squealed as I made my way back to the kitchen. Norman glanced up from his second cup of coffee and gave me his infamous smirk.
"What's got you all happy? Your boyfriend coming up to see ya?" he teased. I rolled my eyes, i didn't have time for a relationship at this point in my life- even if it did get a little lonely sometimes. My career was more important.
"Already told ya Norm, I don't have a boyfriend." I sing-songed as I went to sit with him on his couch.
"Well ya should, pretty thing like yerself." he grinned with his boyish charm.
"Speaking of pretty things, how's Cecilia?" Cecilia Singley was Norman's on again off again girlfriend this year.
Norman's demeanor instantly changed and he sat up straighter." Ya living under a rock or something, Em? The witch cheated on me while she was in Puerto Rico." he said, reaching forward to pick a magazine up from his coffee table. There on the from page was Cecilia and some random making out in a nightclub.
"She's an idiot, Norman. She didn't deserve you." I said, rubbing his arm gently. Norman lifted his eyes and gave me a long meaningful stare.
"Yeah. .thanks Em. You're a real great friend. " he said, reaching out and pulling me into his side. I tugged the long sleeve I was wearing down a little more and made myself comfortable. It'd been a while since I was this relaxed. Norman's night out sure had proven to be effective.
