I woke up the next morning at about ten. I would be late for work. I sighed and took a quick shower. I realized that I'd need to go shopping for some new outfits. I'd ask the boys to drive me to the mall later.

I walked to work and started moving planks of wood to a new pile.

"You're late," a nasally voice said accusingly.

I turned around and saw one of Darry's friends. He had grayish hair, dark brown eyes, and Asian features. His nametag said: Tim Yang.

"And?" I snapped.

"If you need your precious beauty sleep so badly, you are too dainty to work here," said Tim.

"Shut up, Tim. She's stronger than you, so just shut up," Darry growled, promptly dropping a brick on Tim's foot.

Tim winced, glared at me, and walked off. I went back to work.

"Thanks, but you didn't have to do that," I said.

"Greasers defend each other," shrugged Darry.

"I'm not a Greaser and I never will be," I said defiantly.

"We'll see about that," replied Darry, walking off.

I rolled my eyes. I worked for a few more hours and went home at two. It was a nice Saturday afternoon. I went into the house. I'd barely sat down when someone knocked on the door. I groaned. I got up and went to the door.

A pretty Social girl was standing there, her soft brown hair braided. Her brown eyes were nervous.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"Lucy Evelyn Dawson. I'm here to check on Darryl Curtis Jr.," squeaked the girl.

"Why?" I raised an eyebrow.

"My boyfriend said he drowned him."

"Almost. But why do you care?"

"I don't like violence and I never have. Is he ok?"

"Well, kinda. He's at work right now though."

"Oh. I'll come by later. Bye!" she ran off, not waiting for my response.

I was stunned. I closed the door and sat on the couch. The door opened again a few minutes later and I looked up. It was Soda and Two-Bit.

"Hey. I need a favor," I said.

"Ok. What's up?" replied Soda.

"I need to go to the mall. I have money, but no clothes. I only have what I'm wearing," I said.

"Sounds like fun," smiled Soda.

Two-Bit nodded and we went out to the car. Two-Bit got in the back. I was driving so we could go to the big mall downtown. The two boys didn't know how to get there.

"Alright. Let's go," said Soda, sitting in the passenger seat.

We drove to the mall, laughing and talking the whole time. I bought clothes from a few stores and I treated the boys to dinner. We didn't get home until about ten at night. Two-Bit said goodnight and went to his house. Soda and I walked into the Curtis house, talking excitedly. Our happiness faded when we saw Darry.

"Uh-oh," murmured Soda.

"Where have you two been?" Darry shouted.

"We were just shopping. I can't wear the same outfit forever!" I exclaimed.

"You couldn't have left a note or something?" cried Darry.

"I-"

"There's a special place in Hell for you."

"At least it's not with you!"

The house fell silent. I saw Ponyboy watching from the kitchen. Pony and Soda couldn't believe what Darry and I had said to each other.

"I'm going to bed," I snapped.

I walked into the living room, put my bags next to the couch, and went to sleep.

I woke up to the sound of Darry and Two-Bit shouting at each other. Soda occasionally joined the argument.

"You two aren't allowed to go anywhere with her without my permission!" shouted Darry.

"You aren't in charge of me!" yelled Two-Bit.

There was a long silence.

"Fine. I won't. But you're just afraid that she'll fall for one of us instead of you," Two-Bit sighed.

I stood up in time to see Darry grab Two-Bit's throat and slam him against the wall. Soda cried out in surprise and I ran into the kitchen.

"Darry, stop!" I shouted.

No use. He wasn't even listening. I shoved against his back and he let go of Two-Bit, startled. He spun around, his fist colliding with my mouth. My lip split open and blood began to run down my chin. It was very quiet in the house.

"Sasha, I didn't mean to-" started Darry.

I ran out of the kitchen as fast as possible. I left the house and ran to the park, sitting on the bench next to the fountain.

"Have you ever wondered why the last flower to bloom is the most beautiful?" asked a voice.

I hadn't noticed the elderly man sitting next to me. He was holding a small daisy.

"No, I haven't really thought about it," I replied.

"Some people fail to realize that their future is right in front of them until the person who could've changed their life is gone," said the man.

I turned to look at him and he put the flower in my hair, smiling.

"Don't let them get away," he told me.

I smiled and he slowly walked away.

"Ashley!" called Darry, running towards me.

He pulled me into his arms and wiped the blood off of my chin.

"I swear I didn't mean to hurt you," Darry whispered.

"I know," I replied.

We sat on the bench and I saw that Darry's eyes were red.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Johnny and Pony are gone. I fought with Pony really late last night. He and Johnny ran off. They killed a Soc," explained Darry.

"What?" I nearly shouted.

He nodded sadly and I covered my mouth with my hands.

"I'm a horrible big brother. Ponyboy might die and it's all my fault," murmured Darry.

I took his hand and leaned on him. He pressed against me. His hand was calloused and rough.

"It's gonna be ok, Darry," I promised.

"That's what they all say, darlin'," drawled a voice.

Dally walked over to us. It had started to rain.

"Come on, Dally. Let's go to my house," said Darry.

We were walking up the driveway when it started to pour. Soda ran out of the house, chasing Two-Bit, who had Soda's shorts. Soda was naked, except for his underwear. It looked like he'd just gotten out of the shower.

"Give me my clothes!" Soda hollered.

They ran back into the house and I heard Soda cry out triumphantly. I laughed quietly and we went inside.
