‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ During this time, her parents' jobs were flourishing - until their divorce.  Her father, Nicholas Van Doren, received full ownership of the company in exchange for agreeing to spend weekends with his children.  While her mother, Juliet, obtained custody of the children and the family home, Elle and Patrick never discussed the aftermath of the divorce, let alone what happened until the marriage fell apart in a million pieces.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Living in a toxic environment, as well as witnessing and growing up in a poisonous neighborhood, had a greater impact on her than on her younger brother.  Elle was a rebellious student who kept hidden life outside of school so that no one would find out about her actions.  Just when she believed things could not get much worse, her father's car triggered a chain disaster on her way home from private lessons.  As a result, she is one of the survivors.  For weeks, her father fought for his life, but there was no progress, and he was soon removed from the medical device.  The funeral was large and packed with journalists and paparazzi eager to capture as many images and moments from this emotional service as possible.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ It might be claimed that it was the moment when she was only fourteen years old and was without her father - the one person who had always supported her.  Elle isolated herself in her room after the burial, scarcely talking with anybody, and wrote everything she wanted to tell someone in her diary. She began to consider life as a question of when death will come, whether it would come suddenly or gradually.  She got interested in medicine, but recognized in her third year that she was more interested in human psychology, but it was too late to change her major.
