I walk into my dorm. It's overwhelming adjusting from a small but warm household to a grand school with bustling halls yet a cold and unfriendly feeling to it. Thankfully my dorm is the perfect space to just disappear from the feeling of judgement.
The window flutters open, revealing a radiant orb hanging in the sky, streaked with orange, blue and purple hues. The view from my dorm room has always been breathtakingly beautiful. If you look through it from the very edge of my bed, you can see all the fancy buildings: Amelia Wells' father's nightclub block, flashing with neon colours, Mary Gong's mother's dance block, defined by a big LED sign, Felix Beaumont's family hotel, looming over the other buildings with cocky grandeur.I lay onto my bed, allowing my covers to engulf me as I sink further down. It feels good to have at least some comforting rest before the homesickness kicks in. I listen to the beauty of the silence in my dorm. And uh the beauty of Emma's squeaking shoes rubbing against the floor as she paces forwards and backwards.
I always forget other people can feel homesick too. Emma always overthinks little things when we're all alone in our dorm, like if her parents get into an accident and she'll have to continue her family business alone at the age of 15 (unlikely) or if she runs out of stamps for her letters and accidentally breaks her phone so she has no way of talking to her parents (also unlikely because she can just tell the school and call them on the school phone to ask for a new phone). But I can understand her discomfort in a way.
"I say that we watch a movie tonight," I suggest, jolting forward from my previous laying position and sitting upright, glancing up at Emma and Hailey for their opinions. Emma's facial expression noticeably falters as she's brought back to reality and a small smile plasters on her face. She nods in response and takes off her shoes. She gets the remote and sits down on her bed, putting her neatly folded clothes aside. Hailey looks at Emma and raises an eyebrow at me, before shaking her head and smiling.
"I second this. Who's bed should we watch on, let's see..eeny miney...MO!" Hailey gets on my bed only to grab my hand and jump onto Emma's, falling on her as they both explode into a fit of giggles. "Emma's bed it is tonight!"
No one can help but feel better once Hailey lightens the mood.
"A silent voice?" Emma asks us, pressing buttons on the remote to show a variety of movies on Netflix.
"YES."
We've watched that movie a billion times. I can guarantee my eyes will be puffy tomorrow morning..but I guess it's worth it when you're with friends. :)
