Summary: As they're back in Hawkins, tension and awkwardness is going on between Mike and Will. But will that help anything especially with them both being helplessly in love with each other...
Will, El, Mike, Jonathan and Argyle were back in Hawkins. It was a different Hawkins. It was more dangerous now, and scarier.
Jonathan and Hopper were working hard fo fix the cabin so that the Byers-Hopper family would be able to live there. In the time being they were all staying at the Wheelers. El, Will and Jonathan were staying in the basement whereas Joyce and Hopper were staying in the guest room. They all had showers because they definitely needed one badly after such a long time without one."Make yourselves at home" said Mrs Wheeler.
Of course the Wheelers basement was already a bit like home. Mike doesn't know how much time Will must've spent in there in his whole life. A lot for sure. Between playing D&D, Atari or Nintendo with the party and drawing and writing comics with Mike. Will was the friend that Mike had spent the most time with. He used to be very overprotective over Will because he was so worried of losing him again. He was his first friend, they knew each other since kindergarten and had always been best friends ever since. Will was there for Mike when El broke up with him just a few days before. She didn't think they'd need each other anymore in a romantic way. Mike agreed with El but was still pretty sad about it. After all, El was his first girlfriend. It was definitely time to move on.
It was dinner time and Mrs Wheeler had made a lovely meal for everyone.
"Thanks for letting us stay here Karen" said Joyce.
"It's my pleasure. I like the company." said Mrs Wheeler.
"But you still have us Mom" Mike said.
"You guys are never at home anymore. Always off on the bikes or at the Hellfire Club. Hey I remembered the name Mike, you should be proud of me."
Mike was not proud at all about what she'd just said...
"What's Hellfire Club?" asked Will.
Will had not idea Mike had joined another party. They said they wouldn't join another party without each other... If only his Mom hadn't said anything about it. Mike didn't want Will to be offended.
"It's nothing..." Mike mumbled.
"It's that club where you play that game. That stupid game. Well you're not going anymore after what happened." said Ted.
"What game?" asked Will.
"I can't remember what it's called" said Karen.
Will looked at Mike full of confusion.
"It's called D&D Mom..." said Mike, embarrassed.
Will looked at Mike. It seemed like he had a tear in his eye. Will had understood what was happening here. Mike had joined another party.
"Thank you Mrs Wheeler for the lovely meal. I-I'm gonna go to bed..."
Will left the table and ran down to the basement. Mike felt guilty. He got up from the table and ran after Will.
"Hey son finish your food before leaving the table!" said Mr Wheeler.
Mike didn't listen. He had to explain to Will what was happening. He ran down the steps and saw Will lying down on the mattress they'd set up for him. He had his head stuffed in his pillow.
"Will..." Mike said, walking towards him. He sat on the edge of the mattress.
"What?!" said Will, turning away so Mike couldn't see his face.
"I can explain. Please... let me explain."
"There's nothing to say." snapped Will.
"There is. I-I'm sorry."
Will sat up and faced Mike. He was full of tears.
"Well sorry's not enough Mike. I-I can't take this anymore. You just-you make my life miserable! I hate this!"
Mike was hurt by Will's words.
"You really mean that..." said Mike, tears forming in his eyes that he was trying his best to hold in.
"I... No I don't mean that... I'm sorry Mike. It's just-it's not the same anymore."
"It's never going to be the same anymore Will... you know that. But I'm gonna be here for you."
Will burst into tears, silent tears. Mike wrapped his arms round Will's shoulders. Will pulled a fistful of Mike's jumper and stuffed his head into his chest.
"I'm sorry...." said Will.
"You don't have to be sorry for anything. I'm sorry. For being such a jerk."
"You are a jerk" said Will, laughing.
"Hey!" said Mike, unwrapping his arms from Will but laughing along with his...friend.
"Please forgive me..." pleaded Mike.
"Yeah whatever..." said Will.
"You wanna do something fun?" asked Mike.
"Yeah, what?"
"I don't know what do you have in mind?" asked Mike.
"How about first you lend me some pyjamas for tonight because I have NO clothes whatsoever."
"Yeah let's go up to my room, they're upstairs."
Will wiped his tears away. They both got up and went upstairs to Mike's room. Mike looked through his drawers.
"I don't have any clean pyjamas here. I'll go have a look downstairs in the ironing pile. They won't be ironed, is that okay?"
"Yeah, that's fine." said Will, to whom non-ironed pyjamas was perfectly normal.
Mike left the room. Will looked around again. All over the walls were drawings he had done for Mike. But among all these was one very important piece of artwork Will had made for Mike - it wasn't hung up yet. Will glanced over to Mike's desk full of papers all over it. There it was - still rolled up - Will's painting. Will got up from Mike's bed and went to have another look at it. He unrolled it. There he was - Mike with his shield, the heart. Will smiled, hoping Mike liked the painting. He put it back on the desk at its place when someone else caught his eye. It was a letter - that El had written to Mike. He read it when he saw his name on it.
Will's been painting a lot.
Will's stomach bounced. That meant Mike already knew about the painting. His tummy triple-somersaulted after reading the next part.
Maybe it is for a girl. There is someone he likes...
That meant that... Mike knew the painting was someone he liked... That meant that Mike knew Will liked... him. Hopefully he'd forgotten all about this silly letter. Will heard the doorknob tilt. Mike would be in the room in a second. He quickly hid the letter inside the pages of a book on Mike's desk.
"Hey I got you your pyjamas." he said, bringing in a long sleeved top and a pair of shorts.
Mike noticed that Will was acting strange.
"Will, is everything okay?" he asked.
"Yes, of course, why wouldn't it be?" he said, unnaturally.
"You just seem... distracted."
"No, not all. I'm just really happy to be back here with you."
Will was happy to be with Mike...? That put a smile on Mike's face.
"R-really...?" said Mike, blushing slightly.
"Yeah, I missed you guys so much. It was great to see Lucas and Dustin again. And obviously... Max."
Mike's smiled turned round.
"And what about...me...?" he asked. shyly.
"What about you?" said Will, trying to act as cool as possible.
"Aren't you happy to see me too?"
"Oh... hum yeah of course. But I hadn't seen Dustin and Lucas for ages and you... I just spent the last week with you. I was just excited to see my other friends too..."
Mike nodded slightly, trying not to look too disappointed.
"I was super happy to see you at first. But then the lack of attention you gave me..."
"What?" Mike interrupted.
"You know what I mean, Mike. Like at the airport. You couldn't even hug me."
Mike bit his bottom lip, worried. Was Will mad about that...? Mike just felt awkward hugging Will after such a long time.
"And then making me a third wheel at the roller rink..."
"Sorry..." said Mike.
"I just sometimes wonder Mike... "
"What?"
"Do you even care about me...?"
"What? Will..."
Mike put his hands on the side of Will's shoulders.
"Of course I care about you. You're... my best friend."
Will shrugged Mike's hands off his shoulders.
"I'm gonna get some sleep okay" said Will, getting up from Mike's bed, grabbing the pyjamas Mike lent him.
Mike watched as Will left the room.
"Good night..." said Mike, as Will closed the door.
He didn't hear a reply.
Mike got ready for bed and lied down, wondering why he was such an idiot. Why?! Why did it feel so awkward...? He'd been an awful friend to Will. For so long.
