Chapter 4 — Tu Aasmaan Hai

•×•

Anupamaa's heart skipped a beat as their eyes met.
He stared at her, almost piercing through her soul.
She awkwardly slipped out from behind the tree trunk, realising she was caught.

For moments an awkward silence hung.

And then Vanraj mumbled,
"Listen.. don't tell anyone.. about.. about her."
Anupamaa looked at him, drawing a deep breath.
"She was your..", Somehow she couldn't bring the word on her tongue.
"Girlfriend.. yes.", He completed it.
"Ex.. of course. It's got nothing to do with you or my future and it's better if you don't talk about it. My family will disown me if they knew I had an affair.", He said plainly.

She nodded.
Somehow she found herself wanting to say so much about this.. but couldn't find the right words.
The girl's words didn't seem to come from any pain.. they were just demeaning.
She could have left respectfully, but she left after giving scars.
Not very unnatural though.
Who ever left without scarring others?

"Good night.", He said finally as he turned to leave.
"Umm..", She finally mumbled.
"Hmm?"
"She's marrying tomorrow?"
"Yes. Obviously."
"She seemed pretty rich.. must be throwing a grand wedding party..", Anupamaa said softly.
Vanraj nodded.
"Did you get an invite?", She asked.

Vanraj looked at her amused.
"Oh yes.. imagine the audacity. She presented me an invite too.", He said, sounding hollow.
"Then maybe you should go—"
"What?!", He snapped.
"Yes.", Anupamaa said in a matter of factly tone.

"Seriously?! Would you go to your ex's wedding?", He asked, annoyed, crossing his hands before him.
She smiled, warmly.
"If my ex was happy, I'd probably get him married too. That's how one can truly move on. You must let go.", She said.

Uff! Anu you are sounding like a love guru! Should have taken up psychology!
Vanraj looked at her, pausing for moments.

The seemingly stupid uneducated girl sounded like a woman of deep intellect.
Someone who had a great understanding of emotions.
She had a point.
Deep down, he knew, he wasn't even close to moving on.
First loves are pretty difficult to forget.

"But.. how will going to the wedding help?", He asked softly, reconsidering somehow.
"You never know what makes you snap out.", She said simply.

She abruptly realised it was too late.

She said a soft bye and turned to leave.

"You come with me.", He said abruptly.
Anu looked at him, taken aback.
Yet, she couldn't refuse.
His eyes wouldn't let her.

The otherwise unemotional eyes seemed expressive for the first time.
With bated breath and pacing heart, she nodded.

"I will pick you from the start of your house's lane.. Six in the evening tomorrow.", He said.
"Hmm.", She mumbled.

He forced a smile.
She smiled back.

Why do I care? Maybe he's not that grumpy after all.
