The boat drifted along the river for a full day, moving slowly due to unfavorable winds. When night fell, it was still a considerable distance away from the town.
The boatman was an honest fellow and said, "Gentlemen, there's no temple here, so I'm afraid you'll have to spend the night in the cabin."
Chen Xiran responded, "That's alright; spending the night on the boat can be quite an adventure."
At night, after Qin Muwen had put the little bun to sleep, Li Jin opened a small window, lay on the bed with his hands behind his head, and gazed up at the starry sky.
Qin Muwen washed his feet and then joined Li Jin on the bed. Li Jin embraced him with one arm and pointed to the North Star in the sky with his free hand.
"In that direction lies Yanjing," he said.
Qin Muwen seemed momentarily lost in thought, perhaps recalling unpleasant memories. He asked, "A Jin, will we go to Yanjing in the future?"
Qin Muwen's physical changes didn't escape Li Jin's notice. He held him even closer, his eyelids drooping to conceal his dark eyes.
"We will," Li Jin replied.
Qin Muwen remained silent, aware that Yanjing wasn't a favorable place for him. However, listening to A Jin's strong heartbeat, he no longer felt as anxious as before.
With this in mind, Qin Muwen buried his head in the crook of Li Jin's neck, comforted by the familiar scent, and relaxed.
Li Jin continued, "I don't want to deceive you, Wenwen."
He closed the window, covered them both with a blanket, and spoke softly but with unwavering determination, "I am determined to succeed in the imperial examination."
Qin Muwen made a soft sound of agreement, "No matter what decision you make, A Jin, I will always be by your side."
Li Jin's lips curved into a smile, but it was hidden in the darkness of the night.
The next day, the wind was favorable, and around noon, Chen Xiran, standing at the bow of the ship, could make out the town's outline.
A little later, the boat docked near the town. The boatman went ashore first, securing the boat with ropes to a nearby post, and then invited the guests to disembark.
The river gently rippled, causing the boat to sway. Li Jin, tall and with long legs, held the little bun in his arms, stepped ashore confidently.
He extended his hand to help Qin Muwen, his young husband, disembark.
Chen Xiran was the last to step off the boat. As soon as he appeared on the shore, he heard someone nearby calling, "Young Master, you've returned!"
It was Chen Xiran's book boy. Since receiving Chen Xiran's letter, the madam had sent the book boy here daily. Today was only the second day, and they had arrived.
Li Jin bid farewell to Chen Xiran and intended to return directly to the village.
Chen Xiran suggested, "Your house is empty now. How will you spend the night when you return? You could stay at my place tonight, and tomorrow I'll have someone notify Brother Zhuzi to come pick up your family."
Li Jin shook his head, "Today's still early, it's just right to head back..."
Before he could finish, a very familiar figure approached, driving an ox cart.
It was none other than Li Zhuzi.
Li Zhuzi spoke, mirroring Chen Xiran's book boy's words, "Since the village chief received your... letter, the whole village knows you're coming back. I stand in the town every day, so I came here to wait for you when I had the chance."
