CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
STUDY, STUDY, STUDY________________
MAEVE'S ATTENTION WAS stolen from Jess and Rory when the diner's door chimed open, revealing Flynn. "Maeve."
Maeve's eyebrows raised as she turned around, relieved grin spreading across her face as she soon approached him. At least someone was saving her from the unquestionable weirdness of Jess and Rory's sudden new friendship. "Hey, Joseph Gordon-Levitt."
"What?" Flynn huffed out a perplexed chuckle as he wrapped his arm tightly around her shoulders and pressed his lips into her temple.
"I'm just making a reference about how dreamy you are," Maeve agreeably quipped. "Don't get too excited, though, you're no Heath Ledger."
Maeve let her eyes tear away from Flynn's face to momentarily float around the diner, stopping them once she noticed Jess' eyes scanning only her face from his seat.
She didn't choose to analyse the particular emotion behind them as his eyebrows slightly creased inwards—on a surface-level, it appeared to be some sort of testiness—, though Maeve convinced herself that she could just be mistaking the expression for his usually apathetic attitude.
When Maeve faced her boyfriend again, Jess didn't wait too long to avert his eyes before they could kiss.
"Ouch, that kinda hurt." Flynn feigned offence as he watched Maeve huff a chuckle and wrap her arm around his bicep to lead him to the counter.
When they arrived, Maeve grinned at him, the girl leaning closer—a wordless signal—, and Flynn smiled as he positioned his index finger under her chin to bring her jaw up, simultaneously leaning forward and capturing her lips with his as he did so.
After a sweet moment, the pair pulled away, and Maeve went around the counter to wipe it down and carry out her usual duties.
Changing the subject, Maeve just lifted her eyebrows, choosing to focus on Flynn and ignoring Jess and Rory beginning to study at a table for two. "So, how was practice today?"
"It was good," Flynn affirmed. "Missed you there, though."
"Yeah, I had to catch up on some school work," Maeve answered, dividing her attention between wiping the counter and her boyfriend's face. "Speaking of which, I have my AP physics test on Wednesday. Algebra's on Friday."
"I don't know how you can do AP courses, they sound so boring," Flynn blew out a breath before sending her a reassuring smile. "You'll do great, though. Smartest girl I know."
