I leave the bike on the ground and survey my surroundings, not actively searching for anything but taking in my first impressions. I spot Will and remember yesterday, so I quicken my pace toward him.

"Hey, Will," I say as I approach, falling into step beside him. If it were Lucas or Dustin, I might have hesitated, but I'm genuinely concerned about Will, so I make the effort.

He glances at me. "Oh, hey."

"How are you? You know, after what happened yesterday?"

"Fine. Mike got me home." he replies softly, with little apparent interest in the situation.

"I'm glad you're okay." I say with a reassuring smile.

We draw attention from several onlookers, though I'm unsure if it's due to Will or me. Regardless, I pay it no mind.

I intended only to check on Will, but we end up conversing until we reach our classroom. He sits next to Mike, and I take my usual spot at the back of the room.

When Max arrives and takes her seat, she turns to me.

"Hi." she says.

"Hi." I respond, and she turns her attention back to the front, to the professor.

"The case of Phineas Gage is one of the greatest medical curiosities of all time." Mr. Clarke begins. "Phineas was a railroad worker in 1848 who had a nightmarish accident. A large iron rod was driven completely through his head." He illustrates with a line over a skull diagram. "Phineas miraculously survived. Physically, he seemed fine, but his injury caused a complete change in his personality."

This is perhaps the first time I genuinely listen to Mr. Clarke. As I do, I notice Max's gaze on Will, perhaps contemplating the previous day's events. Will briefly meets her eyes before quickly averting his gaze toward the window.

The door suddenly swings open with a loud bang, drawing everyone's attention to Dustin, who had been absent until now. He enters, breathing heavily.

"I'm so sorry, Mr. Clarke," Dustin says as he heads to his seat. "Really, I'm so sorry. Please continue with the class. Don't mind me. Really, continue. Thanks." He keeps repeating his apology.

Mr. Clarke resumes his lecture. "Although it wasn't a crowbar, it was a rod, as I mentioned..."

The four boys huddle together, appearing to converse quietly, though I can't make out their words. Dustin glances at Max and me, whispering something we can't quite decipher.

"Dustin!" Mr. Clarke's voice cuts through the chatter.

"Yes, my lord?"

"Would you care to join the class now?"

"Please, yes." Dustin rummages through his bag.

"The case of Phineas Gage."

"Phineas Gage." He repeats, and I roll my eyes at the way he's talking.
