A voice calling my name slowly pulls me from sleep.
"Evelyn." Max repeats, and as soon as she sees my eyes flutter open, she laughs, probably at my groggy expression. "Good morning."
I sit up in bed. "What?" is the first word that escapes my lips.
"Time to get up, sleepy ass." She turns away and heads to her dresser, her back to me, but I know she's smiling by how her voice sounds. "No school today."
"Why so happy about it?" I rub my eyes and drag myself across the bed until my feet touch the cold floor.
"Chilling, reading, gaming, and listening to music."
I chuckle. "Morning, by the way."
A brief silence follows until Max turns to me, her expression now more serious. "Evelyn," she begins hesitantly, touching her nose as if searching for the right words. "Isn't your mother going to be worried about you? Your brother? We can... I can walk you home if you need."
I cover my face, not wanting to think about facing my mother. "No, it's fine. Let's just— They'll be fine. I'll see them later."
"Okay." Max gives me an understanding smile. She might not agree with my decision, but she respects it.

This morning, Billy and Max's stepfather are already home. I assume they arrived late at night. They don't seem to care much about my presence, probably because they don't know me. I mostly ignore them, except when spoken to, and spend my time with Max, who apologizes repeatedly for her stepbrother's rude behavior and constant shouting.
"Are you sure you don't want to let your brother know you're okay? You can call home from here if you need to." She asks once more. She's asked a couple of times already, but her concern doesn't come off as annoying; she just wants to make sure everything is all right.
"Alright, yeah. If it's not a bother to your family."
"Of course not." She smiles and starts walking toward the dining room, with me following behind. "Mom, can Evelyn use the phone for a second?"
"Sure, no problem." her mother replies from the kitchen, not bothering to look .
Max points to the phone on the wall, prompting me to walk over.
"What's the number?" She asks, grabbing the receiver before I do, because I'm too polite to take the initiative.
It takes me a few seconds to think about it before giving her the number. After dialing each of the numbers I tell her, she hands the phone to me.
When my brother's voice answers, a chill runs through me. "Hello?"
Silence.
I clear my throat. "It's Evelyn."
"Eve, are you okay? Where are you? What happened? Are you safe?" His questions come in a rapid-fire, concerned tone.
"I'm fine. I'm at Max's."
I hear him sigh, "Good." His voice calming. "God, you freaked me out."
"Sorry." I say, apologizing for nothing and everything at once.
