The growling echoes around us, its source impossible to pinpoint.
"The hell was—" Max starts to speak, but she's cut off by Dustin's sudden shout.
"Evelyn, what's going on?!"
"I don't—I don't see anything!" I shout back, just as I hear someone coming up the stairs, and soon enought Lucas' head appears.
"Catch," he tosses his binoculars to me as he finishes climbing the stairs. I immediately bring them to my eyes, scanning the area for any sign of the creature. Lucas positions himself between Max and me, and suddenly, I spot a shadow moving in the distance.
"Got him." I say, passing the binoculars to Lucas after confirming it's the creature we've been waiting for. "There." I point to the location so he can see it too.
"I've got eyes!" Lucas shouts to the others below us. "Ten o'clock! Ten o'clock!"
"You sure that's not a dog?" Max questions skeptically, eyeing the creature.
"What? Of course not!"
"Of course you're not sure, or of course it's not a dog?" she quips, clearly trying to rile him up. I chuckle at her sarcasm.
"Of course it's not a dog!" Lucas retorts.
My smile fades when I see Steve, outside the bus, approaching the unknown creatur while swinging his spiked bat.
"The hell is he doing." I ask rhetorically to myself before quickly heading down the stairs to confront Dustin. "What's he doing?" I ask him urgently, with Max close behind me.
"Expanding the menu." Dustin replies nonchalantly as we both move to the window to watch Steve.
"He's insane." Max mutters, concerned.
"He's awesome." Dustin counters.
"Steve, watch out!" Lucas's voice rings out, warning Steve. We all frown, confused.
"A little busy here!" Steve calls back.
"Three o'clock! Three o'clock!" Lucas repeats, his tone almost desperate.
I turn my gaze toward the direction where three o'clock would be, only to spot three more creatures advancing toward Steve.
"Steve!" Dustin is the first to react, rushing to the door and flinging it open. "Steve! Abort! Abort!"
In an instant, all the creatures charge at Steve, but somehow, he manages to knock a few back, giving himself just enough time to sprint back to the bus. By the time I notice, Lucas has already come down from the roof, and we're all inside, with Steve trying to hold the door shut against the attacking creatures.
"Are they rabid or something?!" Max exclaims, though I can't tell if she's joking or genuinely asking. I barely register her words as a powerful blow shakes the entire bus, forcing me to focus on the immediate danger.
The creatures surround us, violently shaking the bus. None of us can think of anything but surviving at the moment: While Dustin frantically tries to reach someone on the walkie-talkie, which would be pointless because we would be dead by the time they got here, I grab unused metal plates and begin reinforcing the walls to protect the bus —and us— from being distroyed.
Suddenly, the shaking stops, replaced by the ominous sound of slow footsteps on the roof. We all look up in unison. Max is closest to the stairs leading to the roof's opening, and I don't see the creature appear, but I know it's there when Max screams, stepping back in terror and gripping my arm as she continues to stare at Steve, who is now facing the monster.
