"No, I should drive the boat." Keefe insisted, resting a hand on the battered wood of the wagon.
"That's ridiculous. You'll kill someone. Or even worse... Yourself." Sophie looked up at him, begging him.
Dex and Biana stayed silent, and Dex reached for her hand, sure that Fitz couldn't see. It was hard enough keeping their love secret all this way.
"I'm the only one that knows how to do it, Sophie. You have to trust me," He paused, and looked around at everyone, "I know I've got a reputation for being reckless, but I need you to trust me."
"I do, trust you, Keefe. But..."
"But what?" He cut her off, catching her gaze. Sophie was caught off guard by the stern look in his eyes.
When everyone was silent, it seemed the decision was made. There were no excuses. No good ones, at least. As much as they hated the idea, their lives were in Keefe Sencen's hands.
"Sophie, they said the raft is ready." Fitz informed, emerging from the tall grass that surrounded them. "Did you decide who will be directing it?"
Everyone looked at Keefe, and Fitz was taken aback by even suggesting it.
"No, absolutely not." Fitz argued, nursing his broken arm.
Keefe looked down at his arm he was cradling. "And what, you should drive it? You aren't in any condition to do that, look at you, you're crippled."
"I am not crippled. And you were never in any condition. I think it's ridiculous that everyone trusts you with their lives." Fitz stood closer, "You will fail."
"Fitz, Keefe has done this before. He knows how to do it. I trust him. I always have. You should too." Sophie stepped in, making sure the fight didn't escalate.
"Let's take a vote." Dex chimed in, after standing silently with Biana.
The group all agreed and Biana instructed them to raise of hands who they thought were worthy to drive.
Keefe won.
"Fantastic. I'll see you all in hell when he kills us all." Fitz stormed off.
The team looked at each other for split second before Sophie ran after him, but was caught by a soft and gentle hand.
"Let him be angry." Keefe said, lightly gripping her wrist.
He gently slid his hand to hers and twined their fingers together.
Sophie blushed and caught a sparkle in Keefe's eye. "I won't kill us."
Sophie smiled, "I know. I trust you."
"You trust me?" He wiggled his eyebrows. His hair matched the swaying grass, shinning in the golden Oregon sun.
"Yes, Keefe, I always have." She said, looking at her feet.
The glimpse of serious Keefe vanished as he said, "Wait until Fitzy hears this."
Sophie was about to argue, but then was cut off by something, I don't know.
Dex and Biana walked silently behind Keefe and Sophie, hand in hand. It always felt natural, they way that they got along. Even when they fought, it felt like they were meant to.
There was no denying that they were in love.
"When we finally get to Oregon City, we can get married and settle down. Maybe have kids." Dex suggested, earning a friendly slap from Biana.
