CHAPTER 16:

I Am NOT a Disco Dancer

ABHA

Ok, I'm just gonna have to back the seven lower dimensions up for a sec. Violet here just said she was Kara's daughter?!? We're talking about the same Kara Shah who was my mom's only blood-related sibling, got caught up in a love triangle with my parents, and proceeded to kill Old Man Sleeper, and then lost her memory after betraying everyone and almost dooming us all?!? What's Violet so mad about, I've never even met the woman! Although, to be fair, she probably hasn't either. Besides all the magic stuff, it's not like she was a secret. My parents would always tell me that she was off traveling the world, doing odd jobs that would make it a better place and that she was one of the biggest things that brought them together. I was thinking about her a little since finding out everything in the books was real, but not much because I was a little busy trying not to die.

And what did Violet say? That Kara masi begged Dad to take her in so she won't be shamed as an illegitimate child??? I thought we traveled to a parallel timeline, but I'm pretty sure we didn't go back to the times when nuclear families were either enforced or you perished. Was Violet's dad not enough for Kara masi to move on from mine and she wanted to be his wife even for a few minutes? Was this business-oriented timeline that brought us to discriminating against kids with single parents? Or was she just making an excuse so we'd have what she couldn't with Mom? A lot of good that's doing right now.

"Few people know this, but butterflies have been known to feed on dead bodies just like regular flies," said Violet, trying to be intimidating, but her voice clearly shaking. "These butterflies can easily pick you to the bone if you try anything. So talk. What have you done with my sisters?"

I can't say that I'm mad at Violet for what's going on. It's really not her fault. She's lost her family just as much as we have. It wouldn't be fair to blame her for what did to us. I'm glaring at her, yeah, but only because she's literally got me against the wall. But in all honesty, as weird as this may be, I'd really rather have her as an ally than an enemy. And with how scared she looks, I think she feels the same way, but is too afraid to admit it. "Dad" may not believe what I tell him, but I feel like she might. Only one way to find out.

"Ok, I'll talk," I said. "But this might be a little too much to believe."

"Try me," said Violet.

I spilled everything to her, which was honestly pretty therapeutic. I gave her a brief rundown of how, unlike the Abha in this world, my cousins and I actually lived and grew up with our mothers alive but never having another cousin like her. I told her about how this morning, I suddenly woke up in a new world where everything she knew to be true was reality and how the three of us were just trying to find Suru and get back to our own world by figuring out some way to defeat . She paused for a moment, clearly thinking about what I said and what she was going to do next. And just when I thought I was going to be food for these robotic Rhopalocera, they let me go and Violet backed up.

"Do you believe me?" I asked.

"I wish I didn't," said Violet. "But with the way you guys have been acting so suddenly, it's hard to deny when you guys are living proof of it."

"So, you're letting me go?"

"No," she responded. "If I let you go and I'm wrong, you could still pull something and hurt my family or even the world. I'm coming with you."

She offered her hand to help me up and I took it.

"Besides," she said. "If what you say is true, then we both have a score to settle with ."
