16- Children

When I returned, the boy was surrounded by wild animals. Other vampires stared nervously. Anytime they got closer, a tiger or wolf growled to them and a crow landed on their heads and pecked their foreheads. The boy just stared and held my cloak tightly but pet the animals.

"I'm okay, puppy. And... don't be a mean kitty..." He mumbled and I protected the girls from going up. They looked at me and I spoke.

"Zetsumi. Those are the friends you had?" He looked up and the animals growled but surrounded him. They didn't come running to push me back like they did the others. He nodded and mumbled.

"Y-Yeah. The kitty and puppy and birdie..." I nodded and smiled as I got closer. They growled and swiped at me but didn't do anything besides protect him. The crow stayed perched on his head and Zetsumi looked at them.

"Why are they so scared..?" "I assume it's because they realize I'm an opponent they can't beat." He looked and shivered as he held my cloak.

I just got closer and pat his head when I was close enough. They kept growling but didn't swipe in fear of hurting Zetsumi.

"I'm not going to hurt you. I thought I made it clear that I would like to protect you too. I didn't imagine these animals, but it's not the worst I've seen." I shrugged and he looked at me. He looked past as Mya put Mizuki behind her.

"Are... Are they the kids?" "Yes. I don't want your animal friends attacking them... I may be safe, but I am worried about them..." He was confused and mumbled.

"But... I'm not hurt..." "I don't think you're safe because of your age..." He was confused and thought but Mya walked closer. The animals quickly took to her and she laughed.

"Fluffy doggy!" She cheered as the wolf cuddled with her, laying down to let her pet it. I stared and Mizuki whined.

"N-Not fair! I want to pet them too!" She approached and hid behind me for a moment but the tiger sniffed her. I watched and prepared, growing my nails in preparation. However, the tiger carefully took her arm in its mouth before taking her to the two. I stared before sighing.

"Or I'm wrong and it's entirely because of your age... Physically, that is." I sighed and Mya laughed.

"Empress! Can the fluffy doggy stay? Please?" She begged and Mizuki held the tiger and stared at me.

"Momma! The kitty is cute! Please?" I sighed and smiled. "I planned to let him stay. I'm just surprised with the animals." Zetsumi looked down and I pat his head again.

"So Zetsumi? Can I take you in?" He looked aside and mumbled. "I... I don't wanna talk much..." "Of course. Take your time knowing me. But if you could, please know Mizuki and Mya. They're very happy with you and the animals." They nodded and smiled.

I laughed slightly and stood up.

"Mizuki, do you mind sharing a bed with me?" "I can? Yay! I'll be with momma!" She cheered and I nodded. I pat her head and spoke.

"Come on, I'll bring you to the room you can stay at. It's right next to mine, so I'm right next door if you're scared or just feel like we can talk." He nodded slowly and the animals stood up as I picked him up.

The two girls laughed and clung to the animals. Mya was luckily on the wolf's back and hugged its neck as it was careful to not get its neck snapped. Mizuki wasn't as lucky and fell down the tiger's stomach, where she began to cry since she landed on her hurt arm.

"Momma!" She whined and I knelt down. I set down Zetsumi and spoke. "It's okay sweet Mizuki. Momma is right here." She cried and hugged me tightly. "It hurt!" She cried and I nodded. "I know. But you're such a brave girl. When I was your age, I wouldn't be able to even have a cast. I'd be too scared." She sniffled and looked at me.
