The sun sets gently over Melbourne's bustling harbour, tinting the sky with a palette of warm colours. As I stand on the dock, a gentle ocean breeze caresses my U.S. Navy uniform. Memories of battles in the Pacific seem to fade away, at least for a moment, as I lose myself in the peaceful beauty of this foreign city.

My thoughts are interrupted by the familiar sound of a distinctive whistle. I turn my head to see Runner, a friendly man with a charming smile, approaching with a confident gait. The glow of dusk dances in his eyes, as if the Pacific Ocean itself is trapped there.

“-Hey over there, lone soldier.” he says in a teasing voice.

“-Runner!” I respond with a hint of a smile.

“-What is the honor of your company worth to me this evening?”

He leans casually against an empty barrel, smirking :

"-Well, I thought maybe you could come with me to that bar over there. I heard it's the hottest place in Melbourne."

I raise an eyebrow, acting indifferent :

“-And why should I follow you, Wilbur Conley?”

He shrugs, feigning innocence :

“-Maybe because you never knew real life until you had a drink with me.”

I can't help but laugh. His lines are always tinged with this mischievous look that makes me melt a little more each time:

"-Okay, Runner. I guess I can give you some of my precious time."

We walk side by side through the busy streets of Melbourne, exchanging jokes and stories from our respective adventures. His presence is surprisingly calming, as if the war and tumult of the past are slowly fading before him.

Arriving at the bar, Runner invites me to sit by the window. He orders two glasses of whiskey, and we toast to our tumultuous lives and our unlikely meeting in the middle of this global conflict.

"-You know," he begins with an intense look

"-I can't help but wonder why a woman as brave and strong as you found herself in the middle of all this."

I look down, suddenly embarrassed by his sincere compliment:

"-I grew up hearing my father's stories of his own war in World War I. I couldn't stay away when the world had need defenders again."

He takes my hand gently, catching my gaze:

"-You're more than an advocate, you know. You're an inspiration to us all."

A knowing silence settles between us, our eyes meeting as if they communicate thoughts that words could not express.

Finally, Runner breaks the silence:

"-You know, there's something I haven't been able to help but notice since I met you."

"-Oh ?" I ask, intrigued.

He comes closer, his warm breath tickling my face :

"-Your eyes. They shine like the stars above the ocean. And when I look at you, I feel like even the darkest battles could never dull their shine."

My heart pounds, every word Runner says ringing through me like a haunting melody. Slowly, he approaches his lips to mine, sealing our budding connection with a gentle kiss.

The evening passes quickly, and soon we find ourselves walking along the quays, looking for a quiet place where we can be alone. When we finally find a secluded spot, Runner pulls me against him and our lips meet again in a passionate kiss.

Between breaths, he whispers in my ear :

"-You know, from the moment I saw you, I knew you were special. And now, I can't deny what I feel."

I look up at him, my own feelings boilin :

"-Runner, I feel the same way. I can't ignore this bond growing between us."

He hugs me gently, and the whole world seems to fade away, leaving just the two of us in this perfect moment.

As we lose ourselves in our emotions, Runner breaks the silence again:

"-Do you know what I believe? I believe that something bigger than us orchestrated this meeting. And I intend to find out what the future reserves for us, together."

My heart races as I respond with a genuine smile :

“-I’m ready to experience every moment with you, Runner.”

On that starry night in Melbourne, in the middle of a world at war, our destinies intertwined in ways neither he nor I could have predicted. And with every look exchanged, every word whispered, we write our own love story amid the echoes of the Pacific.
