Evening orange skies shroud the island of Guadalcanal as stars begin to shine in the sky darkened by the smoke of war. I'm sitting alone, sitting by the campfire, lost in thought. My gaze rests on the dancing flames, but my mind is elsewhere.
Suddenly, a shadow looms in front of me. It's Robert Leckie, my childhood friend, whom I found here, on this war-torn island. He sits down next to me, and we stare at each other in silence for a moment.
Robert breaks the silence by asking me :
"-How are you, Y/N? You seem preoccupied."
I smile shyly and reply :
"-Yeah, I'm fine. It's just this war is so intense, and I sometimes wonder when it's all going to end."
He lays a comforting hand on my shoulder :
"-I get it. But we'll get through this, you'll see. We've been through so much together, from our childhood to now. Nothing can stop us."
His words warm my heart. I've always had faith in him, in us. We've been friends for so long, and now, in this chaos of war, our bond grows stronger every day.
In the distance, I hear laughter and voices. It's our comrades-in-arms, Wilbur "Runner" Conley, R.V. Burgin, Merriell "Snafu" Shelton and Jay de L'Eau, who are having a relaxing time. They all have a thing for me, and while I don't want to admit I like it, I can't deny the effect it has on my ego.
Robert smiles at me when he sees where my eyes are :
"-You know, Y/N, you're the only woman here, and that doesn't go unnoticed. You make a lot of men's heads spin."
I blush and reply, teasing him :
"-And you, Robert, aren't you concerned?"
He takes my hand in his and strokes it gently :
"-Oh, believe me, I am. But you're more than just a crush on me, you know that."
My heart is racing, and I look away to hide my confusion :
"-Robert, maybe we should go back, the others will wonder where we are."
He shakes his head :
"-No, not yet. Let's give them some more time for themselves. I want to enjoy this moment with you, Y/N."
He stares at me intensely, and I feel myself overwhelmed. His gaze and his magnificent blue eyes express so many things I cannot ignore. The attraction between us becomes undeniable, and I know it's the same for me.
"Robert, I..." I start to say, but he puts a finger to my lips.
"Hush. Let me tell you something. he said in a soft voice. Since the day we met, I always knew you were special. And now, in this war that drives us to live every moment as if it were the last, I realize that I can no longer hide what I feel."
I look at him with stars in my eyes:
"-And what do you feel, Robert?"
He smiled tenderly :
"-I'm in love with you, Y/N. I've always been in love with you."
My heart leaps in my chest, and without thinking anymore, he comes closer to me. Our lips meet in a sweet kiss under the starry sky. Our bodies come together, sticking to each other, as if nothing else exists around us. He starts running one hand through my hair and the other strokes my back. And at some point during our kiss, he unzip my pants, starts taking my pants off and touches my lower abdomen.
However, as we are immersed in this magical moment, we are interrupted by a familiar voice:
"-Well, well, I see that I have come at the right time!"
It's Wilbur "Runner" Conley, my lifelong best friend. We hadn't seen him, but he's watching us with a mischievous smile.
We part quickly, but Robert doesn't let go of my hand :
"-Runner, it's not what you think..." he begins to explain.
Runner cuts him off, laughing :
"Oh, don't worry about me, lovers! I always knew this would happen eventually."
Robert and I exchange a knowing look, then I let out a small laugh :
"-You are incorrigible, Runner."
He shrugs :
"-Well, that's what a best friend are supposed to do, right?"
And with those words, we all go home together, knowing that our friendship and love are stronger than ever, even in the midst of war.
