Moving is a very strange and stressful feeling, don’t you think? I mean, you have to pack all of your belongings in a short amount of time and put them in a truck, or your car, and then drive for a long amount of time to your new home. Sometimes hours. But imagine how it feels for kids. Especially young kids, under 10 years old. They had finally got a grip on what reality was for them, how to talk, walk, socialize, and well, be human! And then they have to move, abandoning their friends. It's a terrible feeling for them. Days-E was having this feeling on the car ride to the new house. But 10 times worse. It was a nice warm autumn day, with nice windy breezes, but the perfect weather didn’t help Days-E’s anxiety. Days-E is 7 years old. And she is mute. So she has a hard time with talking to people, she is also antisocial. She had one friend in Wayside. But now she’s moving so she will never be able to see them again. The new town she's moving into is old. It's called Terrioson Town. Days-E was never taught how to spell her name, so she spelled it from how she heard it. ‘Days E’. She was watching all of the trees, cows, and birds as she was on the truck, driving away from home, and to their new house. A few months before this she heard her mom talking about her to her doctor.
“I'm scared for Daisy! There's no schools here that will take her in because she's mute. There's no special ed either, so we might have to move so she can get her education!” Her mom always wanted the best for Days-E. But sometimes it didn’t feel like it. Her mom would try to teach her how to spell her name ‘correctly’. But Days-E felt like the other way of spelling it wasn’t her. It felt like an ugly mask. She didn’t necessarily think that the name ‘Daisy’ was a bad name. It just didn’t feel like her. So she always stuck with spelling her name like she always had. Days-E. She sometimes wished she could talk. But if she could she wouldn’t know how to say different things or words. Because she was never taught.
“Daisy honey could you stop putting your head on the window while the truck is moving? You might get a concussion! COuld you also pass the trail mix? Thank you.” Days-E passed the trail mix and continued watching the trees and animals, just without her head on the window. She didn’t like that her mom never said her name correctly, she said ‘Daisy’. But she couldn’t let her know.
“Daisy honey I know that you're upset, but this is going to be a brand new start for you! You're going to be able to meet people like you, it will be easier to make friends!” Her mom said. She sounded too happy about the move. Days-E was sad. She wanted to be able to say bye to Jessica, one last time. Jessica was her only friend in school. And she was a normal girl. In fact, she was pretty popular. And yet she decided that she was going to be nice to Days-E, and soon be her best friend. And now they were going to be 400 miles away. Days-E didn’t hate her mom for that. But she wished that she would let her know, so that she could say goodbye to Jessica. Jessica wouldn’t know that Days-E was gone. Days-E wondered if she thought that she ghosted her, or ran away from town. It didn't matter anymore though. SInce they're gone. Days-E wanted to be in a normal school, with normal kids, because Days-E was normal. She didn’t understand why everyone said she wasn’t. She had to go to “Special Ed '' because she was "Special ". Days-E didn’t know if that was good or bad. She didn’t know if she was normal.
“We’re almost there! We only have 10 minutes left until we’re there! Isn't that exciting?” Mom said. Days-E Nodded. It wasn’t a confident nod though. Although they eventually got there. And she had to pretend that she was excited. Because if she doesn't, her mom would be angry that she isn’t grateful. So now she was getting out of the car to her new house. It would never be her home. If anything it would be her new nightmare.
