Asumi pov:
My breath was stuck in my throat and I was frozen on the spot. Itachi san's genjutsu had been released, returning me to the forest clearing where I had met him and Kisame san. Itachi san was right in front of me, his dull charcoal eyes locked with mine. With the scenes I had witnessed in the genjutsu replaying vividly in my mind, I could not make out the emotions in Itachi san's face at the moment. I was, however, certain that he was most likely anxious about my reaction to the great truth he had just revealed.
It was several moments before I finally blinked, my eyes burning from staying open for quite long. I also exhaled with a shudder, and continued to breathe rapidly after that. It was some more time before I found the will to move, but it didn't end well. Shifting on my feet when I was drained of energy from the shock made my knees buckle. I collapsed to the ground, wincing as the rough gravel scraped my knees slightly.
"Asumi san-"
"Don't," I stopped Itachi san before he could close the gap between us to ask if I was alright.
Saying that I was overwhelmed was an understatement. There were no words to describe the different emotions coursing through me at the moment. The only thing playing in my mind over and over again was the desperate effort Itachi san and his friend had made to prevent the coup that the Uchiha Clan had planned and the hostility the village had towards the clan because of their fear of the Sharingan. Both sides held resentment and negative emotions towards each other, enough to cause more than mere bitter feelings. The mistrust had caused the rift to grow into something that both sides wished to solve with only violence.
It wasn't unusual for people to desire power, especially when the leaders that they had trusted were suddenly scrutinizing them to the extent of monitoring their daily lives by spying on them - and the Uchiha knew about it. They knew exactly why Danzo sama had ordered for their clan's settlement to be shifted to the outskirts of the village but in a place that was surrounded by the ANBU's lookout points. He had not been good at hiding his intentions, and that had elicited more anger in the clan member.
The emotional struggle Itachi san and Shisui san had had during that time had been so painful to witness. They had screamed and shed tears at every step, but had shown only strength and determination in front of other people. They had carried such a great burden on their own despite being teenagers - with Itachi san being barely thirteen.
No, perhaps that wasn't the most harrowing. The fact that Itachi san had witnessed so much war and death at the mere age of six aside - to the extent that even his father had pushed him into it as if such a young child would not be affected by it - he had been forced to slaughter his own family for the sake of the rest of Konoha.
The sight of him trembling and crying moments before he cut down his own parents on the bloody night everyone knew of, all the more because his parents knew of his working as a double agent and making his decision to stop the coup through massacre because no other way would work, was so terribly saddening. His parents accepted their fate without remorse, and had only been proud of Itachi san for doing what he believed in, for making his own decisions in the matter, and for bravely carrying a burden that no one else could.
