Everything around me halted as the blood pounded in my head again. Did I just hear this man correctly, that Yu-Jin had been beaten up by bullies at his school and this was the first I was hearing of any of it? How else could I fail my son today?

I took in a ragged breath and said from behind my hand, "I need to see him. Is he okay? How bad is it?" I felt my eyes widen with each word. Seo Changbin's hand on my shoulder squeezed it reassuringly. I could see a firm compassion in his eyes now, and something about his steadiness and calmness right now brought my fear down several notches. If my son was here laughing and playing games with this man, then he can't be too badly hurt. ... Right?

"It looks a little worse than it is since the two places they hit him are still swollen. We put some ice on it when he first got here while we waited for the food, so it's gone down some. Just remember that you're on his side. Ask him about it but listen first before trying to fix it. Okay?"

I was stunned. My brows drew together and creased as I stared up at him in confusion. "Why... are you being so kind to my son? He's nothing to you."

A sharp pain flashed across his face, and he withdrew his hand back to his side. He looked over my head and at something further into the apartment. "He reminds me of me when I was young."

I didn't know if my heart was breaking or beating too hard. Suddenly, I wasn't as suspicious or angry with this neighbor as I was when I first arrived at his door. And I didn't know what to do with that information.
