Sage slept for a long time.
Yuki couldn't sit with her the whole time.
He felt terrible, keeping the answers she needed from her.
He couldn't do anything to ease her pain. She was lost and all he could do was say her name.
Sage.
She was sleeping upstairs and he was sitting out on the porch. Away from her.
She had been suffering, outright sobbing, the first time he'd ever seen her cry so much.
---
When Sage woke up, she was alone.
She changed her clothes, she had school, right? Or... maybe it was still early.
She didn't know.
How long had she been sleeping?
She walked downstairs, it seemed everyone else was in their uniforms too. That was a good sign at least.
Then she saw Tohru.
Something inside Sage broke down and the blonde quietly strode over and leaned down to hug the brunette.
"Oh- uh- good morning Sage" the blonde took some deep breaths before doing her breathing patterns.
"You're okay..." Sage sighed in relief. "No one would tell me what was happening... I was worried"
"It's okay now, everything is okay" Tohru assured and Sage released the brunette and nodded.
Part of Sage was still hesitant to leave. Like if she moved Tohru would completely slip away from her.
That thought alone was taxing.
"I made breakfast if you're hungry" Sage nodded.
Sage took her usual spot by Yuki, she looked at him and when he finally looked at her she gave a gentle smile.
Despite the drama that had ensued, she didn't blame him. He seemed uncertain.
Sage ate quietly and was surprised that she seemed to lose track of Yuki upon entering the school grounds.
She was worried about him.
He seemed off and Sage was trying her best to rack her brain and find the answers but there just wasn't anything there.
"Hey, Sage, have you seen Yuki Sohma?" It was one of the student council members.
"No. I can look around for him though"
"Thanks, Sage!" She called and Sage took off scouring the building for him.
It felt like he was slipping away. Like he was putting up some sort of wall, trying to lock something away and taking all of himself with it.
Sage wasn't ready to let go of him. She didn't think she'd ever be ready to let go of him.
She was heading up the stairs, to the roof.
"Sage!" She turned around and saw Yuki. She smiled.
"Yuki," Sage said softly.
"You've been worried about me," he said. "I didn't notice, I'm sorry," he said.
"No, it's okay. I-" Sage stopped herself, what was she trying to say?
Why couldn't she ever express what she wanted to?
"Sage...?" Yuki asked.
"I'm not good with my own feelings. And I know you're not either. So- I don't care if when you're talking to me and- and these ugly things start pouring out. I don't care if some hatred slips into your voice when you speak someone's name. I don't care about what revulsion you hold. It's you and I want to be with all of you!" Sage said.
"I-..." he paused, and Sage chuckled.
"We suck at this!" She said. "Yuki. I love you!" She said. "I love how hard you try to be better. I- I love your sense of humor. I love the way you care so much that maybe it hurts a little. I love the way you hold my hand, I love the way you talk to me. I love how you don't hold back. I love how it feels when you're beside me and I don't want to lose you because you're scared of losing me... I love you, Yuki... so stick by me, please?"
Yuki seemed shocked. He stood there for a few seconds before he climbed the stairs to meet with Sage, he took her right hand, cupped her face, and kissed her.
It was quick, but Sage felt every ounce of love that Yuki could muster.
"I cannot believe... it took us a year just to say it," Sage said. Yuki chuckled, smiling up at her and he sighed.
"I love you too, Sage," he said softly. "Summer is starting soon... I think I'll go out more if you'll join me?" Sage leaned against his chest.
"I think I could manage that" Sage admitted.
"It doesn't all sound bad. Watching fireworks, visiting festivals, going to the beach. It seems like the perfect moment to make memories. Memories with you" Sage froze up, her face feeling a little warm. "You don't want to?" Yuki asked.
"Uh- no of course I do. That'd be lovely-"
"You should know-" Yuki stepped up onto the same stair as her, then pinned against the railing half wall. "-I'll kidnap you if I must, princess" Sage's whole face was red and she knew it.
Yuki laughed.
"Don't laugh at me you jerk!" She said jokingly and Yuki continued to do so, even laughing harder. "Stop it! I- I will kiss you if you don't stop" Sage said.
"Is that supposed to be a threat?" He asked catching his breath.
"You'll see," she said and Yuki suddenly looked a little puzzled.
"Wait, Sage, what's that supposed to mean?" He asked.
"Don't worry about it" Sage said.
"Sage-"
"Nope," she said. "You messed up, big time" she assured.
"Sage, I'm sorry I laughed" he tried.
"It's too late. I am going to kiss you on the mouth and this is a threat" Sage said as they walked down the stairs.
"Sage people can hear you" Yuki reminded.
"Hm?" Sage chuckled, they were in the middle of a crowded hallway.
She pulled on Yuki's tie and kissed him.
"See? It was a threat" Sage said. Yuki's whole face was red.
They were walking home with Haru this time.
Kagura caught up surprising no one as she totally kicked Kyo to the ground.
Ayame was there with a bunch of crab and Momiji showed up with Kisa and Hatori.
"So, Sage, rumor has it you kissed Yuki right in the middle of the hallway," Momiji said.
"Oh? Really?" Kagura asked
Sage went red.
"How's that threat holding up now?" Yuki asked.
"Oh, you better shut it!" Sage said as she shoved him playfully.
"So these two are finally a little thing, huh? That's so cute" Ayame said.
"You shut up, scum," Yuki told him.
Sage did love having the Sohma's over. They were all lovely...
