Rain is five years old, and he is all sunshine and bubbly plus full of imagination. To him the whole world seems like an amazing adventure.
Sure, he gets a bit lonely sometimes, adults and children alike find his ability to talk almost nonstop annoying and off-putting. Rain doesn't let it bother him, there is always too much to do, so much to see. Rain has explored almost every corner of the small Korean town he has known all his life.
Now he is going on a real adventure, off to visit his grandparents in Thailand all by himself. He is going to get to stay the entire summer because his parents have an important business trip to make.
Rain will miss his parents, but he is so excited about seeing his grandparents. They have visited Korea several times and Rain absolutely adores them.
Best of all, Sky will be there. Sky isn't related to Rain, but his grandparents have raised the other boy since the day he was born. Sky is his best friend in the whole world and, although he often says Rain is annoying, he never pushes him away or refuses to play with him like the other children. He is just a few months older than Rain and they are as close as siblings whenever they get to be together. Plus Sky always does the most amazing magic tricks for Rain.
Rain is trying to be a good boy, his parents have given him plenty of books and games to keep him occupied and the airline has provided an escort to keep Rain safe in the airport and to make sure he makes his connections. The stewards and stewardesses are also checking on him regularly and bringing him snacks and drinks. His seatmate is a kind old auntie who doesn't seem to mind hearing the child prattle, this isn't coincidence, the grumpy businessman who was his original seatmate had begged for someone to switch with him. Even with all this, Rain is having a hard time sitting still.
The flight seems to take forever, but finally Rain is being escorted to his grandparents at the airport in Bangkok. As soon as Rain spots them he takes off running and tackles Sky with a hug before even greeting the older couple.
His grandparents both laugh as Sky shoves him off and tells him to greet his "yaai" and "dtaa". Rain bounces and hugs his grandparents with a happy cry. This will be the best summer ever.
As soon as Rain and Sky are alone in their shared room, Rain says, "Show me a magic trick, Sky, please."
Sky sighs, although only five, sometimes Sky seems so much older than Rain, "Rain, I told you they aren't tricks and grandpa said we shouldn't."
When Rain's grandparents had found out that Sky had shown Rain his magic the usual jovial pair had become very serious. Grandpa had sat them both down and said they shouldn't do it again. Then he had told Rain in a serious tone of voice that he couldn't say a word to anyone. They might just think it was his imagination.
"Like Flufster?" Flufster was a 6 foot pink bunny that Rain claimed lived in his closet in Korea.
"Right," Grandpa had said, "They might think it is just your imagination like Flufster, but if anyone believes you Sky could be hurt by it. You wouldn't ever do anything to hurt Sky right?"
Rain shook his head, he loves Sky, he would never hurt him. So Rain had never told anyone about Sky's magic. That didn't stop his desire to see more of it. Like most children Rain thinks the phrase "don't do that" can be twisted into "don't do that where the grownups can see".
"Please, Sky, I want to see it." Rain says.
Sky eyes Rain's teddy bear menacingly. Rain clutches it closer to him. "Not that one." Last year Sky had gotten so mad when Rain had called him a wizard like in Harry Potter. Sky had set Rain's teddy bear on fire with a wave of his hand and said vehemently that he was a witch not to ever call him a wizard again. Rain had screamed and dropped his teddy bear which was immediately fine without any burn marks. Even though Sky had said it was just a 'lusion, Rain had no desire to see that particular trick again, he had worried for his teddy bear's life.
