ASAN MEDICAL CENTER
The unexpected visitor
The sterile air of the ASAN Medical Center buzzed with the usual symphony of activity. Dr. Lisa Manobal, the best doctor in the cardiothoracic surgery department, emerged from Dr. Kim Jongin's office, her exhaustion palpable. The Chief of Surgery, a jovial man with a penchant for teasing, had just congratulated her on her successful operation and reminded her of the prestigious Hilaris Research Contribution Award she was set to receive.
"You should be happy, Lisa," Dr. Kim had said, "This is one of the most coveted awards in the field."
Lisa had managed a tired smile, but her mind was elsewhere. The weight of her recent diagnosis, a rare form of leukemia, hung heavy on her heart. It was a secret she had kept from everyone but doctor bae.
As they walked down the hallway, they met Dr. Kim's fiancee, Dr. Krystal Jung, a renowned plastic surgeon.
"How was the surgery, babe?" Dr. Kim asked, his voice laced with affection.
"It's okay," Krystal replied, "We made several alterations to the Senator's wife's face due to the accident."
Her gaze landed on Lisa, and a concerned frown creased her brow. "Glad to see you here, Doctor Manoban, how are you?" she asked, her voice soft.
Lisa forced a smile, but Krystal's keen eyes saw through it. "Are you okay? You look different today," she said, her fingers gently cupping Lisa's face.
"Just because you're a plastic surgeon doesn't mean you can diagnose my face," she joked, but her voice lacked its usual playful lilt.
The conversation turned to Lisa's friendship with Dr. Bae Joohyun, the head of the Hematology department, a woman known for her stern demeanor and intimidating presence. Jongin and Krystal, ever the gossips, were curious about the unlikely bond between the two doctors.
"Okay, anyway, I've heard that you and Doctor Bae have been getting close for the past years despite being in a different department." She grinned at her.
"I've noticed too, what's going on between you two? If Jennie finds out, she'll rush to the hospital and confront her, we know how jelly your wife is." Jongin chuckled.
"She's a friend---
"But how did you two become friends? Doctor Bae was known to be a strict, intimidating doctor from the Hematology department." Krystal cut her off.
"And other doctors are afraid of going to their department to get the blood test results," Jongin explained.
"Why?" Lisa inquired.
"Because she was there," Jongin says, earning an eye roll from Lisa.
"Of course, she's there, she's the head division of Cancer and the Medical Oncology and Hematology department." Lisa retorted.
