Happy birthday.

To you, dear reader, it may sound like a good reason to celebrate another year of being older (or you just don't care and that you treat it like another day of living).

But in my eyes, it was two simple words that I thought to never hear again even when I was living as a human with Gia and Marcus.

And while my family and friends were waiting for my reaction, my mind flashed back to all the times I was back at the pack mansion basement and in the merciless hands of Keith and his buddies- all of them using me as their punching bag to remind me that my existence was nothing to celebrate about...

"Useless! Simply useless!" Keith screamed, landing blow after blow with his fists as I cried for mercy. "Every single day that you're still alive makes me want to kill you where you stand. And since it's your fucking birthday, I just hate you more and more."

"Keith, man! You're going too far with this," one of his buddies said worriedly. "Alpha Harvey-"

"I don't care!" Keith bellowed, taking a baseball bat and swinging it at my chest. "I need to remind this punk that he's not fit to live here! Make him see that he's worthless to the fucking world!"

SMACK!

"You try to leave, I'll kill you!"

CRACK!

"You tell Alpha and Luna or their whore of a daughter Ciara, I'll kill you!"

SMACK!

"You let anyone heal any more of the wounds that I place on you, I'll kill you!"

CRACK!

"Keith, man! That's enough!" another Beta yelled worriedly. "We gotta get out of here!"

"Almost done," Keith hissed, dropping the bat and getting out a pocket knife. "This is for our future Alpha- Regan. He told me to make sure that I give this message to you: You. Need. To. DIE!"

And he smiled wickedly as he stabbed me twenty-one times. The last thing I heard before I was greeted by slumber was "Happy Birthday, runt! Now go die, already!"

And that was just three days before I would be ultimately be rejected and exiled...

"Carson?!"

I snapped out of my thoughts to glance up at the motherly and concerned ones of Cora Mae McNeese (Cathy Sue's twin and the head maid) as she and another female maid hovered over me. "Child, you gave everyone such a scare," the former said. "Child, are you all right?"

I shook my head no. "I was reliving some nasty memories," I confessed. "I never really told anyone this, but I never actually had a chance to have a good birthday back at the Four Aces pack."

"What?" the second maid said in disbelief. "Why?"

I took a deep breath. "Because it was also when the bullying got worse and every day the Betas would try to kill me or make my chances of healing worse. The one birthday that really had me panicking was when I had turned sixteen. And they REALLY wanted me to die that day. The worse part of it all was it was three days before-"

"You were rejected by that pig Regan Zallenda," Cora Mae finished for me. "And you were exiled that day."

"Hijo de puta," the second maid spat, her eyes flaring up in anger. "Your Majesty, if I can be real with you?"

I nodded. "By all means," I replied, ushering both women to sit down on the bed before accepting a tissue from Cora Mae.

"Okay, so your birthdays weren't always the ones to be happy about since most of the guys there wanted you to die. But even I know that even back then you never died at all, am I right?"

"Yeah," I replied. "I was somehow taken to the infirmary and treated for my wounds by the twin Vincente doctors. And they even had a little cake sent for me by Ciara and Miles."

"Exactly," the second maid pointed out. "Don't you see? It was destiny that made sure that you stayed alive for your true purpose, yeah? I mean, it was no accident that you became the Moon Wolf and the co-ruler of the wolves with Kings Iain and Archer. So sonreir, chico. Smile. Let yourself forget all of the pain and the tears that you shed so many times. Birthdays are for celebrating the future, not for mourning for the past and the what-ifs. And as for that son of a bitch Regan? I had half of a mind to tear his heart out if I didn't have to stay here and clean up the palace with everyone else."

"That's true," Cora Mae replied. "Yesenia was ready to go off when she heard of the news two years ago and, if it weren't for her mate Carlos, was ready to shoot him. And she's right about birthdays being for celebrating. Don't let yourself mourn for what could've been, baby. Let yourself be happy that Regan is in hell while you're going to rule the supernatural world with the Goddess herself. She is so proud of you, I can tell you that much."

I took a few deep breaths, wiping the last of my tears. "Thank y'all," I said. "I never meant to had that nasty meltdown. It's just-"

"We know," Yesenia replied. "We all had memories that we want to forget, too. But also think about the good ones that you never want to let go of, Your Majesty. There's a new world out to explore and life's too short for being unhappy."

I nodded. "Thank you," I said. "So, what now?"

"Well, everyone's getting things ready for the first of a week-long celebration, and that Joneslake phoenix made me swear not to tell you," Cora Mae replied. "But between you and me, tonight's going to be a masquerade ball- Venetian-themed, too."

"Now, you take a good hour to unwind with a nice bath and I'll have the cook fix you a light lunch," Yesenia piped up as she and Cora Mae took their leave. "Happy birthday, Your Majesty. Celebrate it with pride."

And as soon as they left, I took a look at my reflection in the mirror. Aside from my puffy eyes that were from crying and having that nasty panic attack, I looked a little bit better. "Happy birthday to me," I said to myself. "No more tears, Carson. It's time to celebrate."

And I meant it.

I wrote this chapter as a reminder to everyone that birthdays are meant to be celebrated with good memories and promises for a better future, not mourning for what could've been. We have our bad memories, but we need to remember the good ones. Like Cora Mae said, birthdays are meant for celebrating and not mourning. Carson needed to hear this since he didn't have any good birthdays beforehand. And I'm sure you all needed to hear this as well.

In the next chapter, the identities of our mystery threat and the female mystery guardian will be revealed as the mystery threat is planning to attend the party. Don't go away!
