Phoenix and Miles are descending the elevator to argue against each other for a recent murder in court. The elevator made a calm humming sound as they went down, well– calm for most individuals. The only thing that could ever occupy Miles' mind while riding an elevator is the DL-6 incident that took place 16 years ago. Watching his father argue with some man, blacking out, and finding his father dead. Even being led to believe that he was the one that did it for years on end. It ruined Miles.
Miles is forever grateful to Phoenix, his boyfriend, and prior rival. They started getting closer after the gourd lake trial, restoring their childhood friendship. Just a year after that they started a relationship, and learned a lot about each other. Including how uncomfortable Miles feels every time he finds himself in an elevator.
What makes it worse, is that this is the same exact elevator that his father died in, there's still a bullet mark in the wall. The only reason the pair hadn't taken the second elevator, or even the stairs is because a new set of stairs is being built at the moment, and the other elevator is out of order. How unlucky is that?
Phoenix squeezed Miles hand, as if to tell him that nothing bad is going to happen, only seconds later, the humming from the elevator went silent, and the ground stopped vibrating.
There was a blackout.
Miles tried to hide his reaction, but to no avail. His hands started sweating and his breathing became shaky and uneven. He glanced at the bullet mark in the wall again, the corner that his father was found dead in.
Miles got vertigo, and started feeling like he might pass out, not from lack of oxygen (yet) but from an upcoming panic attack. Miles began to hyperventilate. Phoenix was saying something, but he couldn't hear it clearly. Everything sounded like he was underwater, being able to hear Phoenix, but not able to make out what he was saying.
Phoenix stabilized Miles and lowered him down so he could sit, and held his hands, gently caressing his thumbs.
Miles sat in the same corner as the DL-6 incident, the scene was replayed in his head. Tears start to spill down his cheeks, he barely even realizes.
"Edgeworth? Look at me, please. Everything's okay."
Miles could only respond with a small nod. Everything is not okay. This felt exactly like it did 16 years ago. Miles couldn't even process anything that Phoenix was doing now, until he felt warm, welcoming arms wrap around him.
Just then Miles noticed how much he is crying. It felt pathetic.
After about 10 minutes of Phoenix holding Miles and gently rubbing his back, he was finally calmed down.
"My apologies.. That was dramatic of me."
"No it wasn't, it's fine. That must have been a huge trigger."
"It's been 16 years, I should be over this by now.."
"Well you were only 10, so I can understand why it's still having an effect on you now."
"I suppose.."
It's clear that Miles feels insecure about how much DL-6 still effects him, even after all this time. When someone is that young and experiences something that traumatic, it leaves a permanent problem in their head for years to come, that will never be fully fixed.
Phoenix gently cupped Miles' face, pulling him closer and kissing him. The two have only been dating for around a month or two, so they haven't kissed too many times. Miles is still a bit awkward, since this is his first relationship. He didn't bother with them throughout school.
The kiss seemed to help Miles calm down further.
"Nobody is going to hurt anyone, okay? I'm here for you, don't ever be afraid to open up. I love you." Phoenix said once Miles pulled away from the kiss.
"I love you too, and.. Thank you." Miles responded, avoiding eye contact since he doesn't know how to handle sappy conversations.
10 minutes later, the elevator started moving again and the court was postponed until the next day due to Miles not being in a mental state where he could argue properly.
The couple spent their free time cuddling, Miles fell asleep laying on Phoenix's lap. He wasn't disturbed by any nightmares that night.
