Chapter One
"Kace!" I was awoken by my mother screaming my name. "Get up! It's your first day!"
Oh, yeah.. First day of senior year. Why the hell was I waking up again?
"Alright!" I yelled back, forcing myself to get up. I shuffled to the closet in boxers and yawned as I grabbed a shirt and a pair of jeans. I got dressed and pulled on my shoes while walking down the steps. Then I remembered I had to brush my teeth. I went to the bathroom, did that, then ran water through my hair. I shook it out, and that was it with that.
I suddenly smelled waffles and hustled back downstairs just as a plate was set out for me. "Thanks Mom, love you." I said, kissing her on the cheek and sitting down to eat my breakfast.
"Only when you have food." She said back, cleaning the counter. Suddenly my dad walked down the steps in his usual. A suit. He was a lawyer, always walking around with fancy clothes and briefcases. Mom and I didn't even bother with our clothes. She usually wore a dress, and I wore a t-shirt and jeans most of the time.
"Mornin' kiddo." He said as he took a waffle. I growled at him, and he pretended to be offended but ate it anyway. I ate some more as he kissed Mom. "Good luck at school today." Then he was out of the door.
I leaned back in my chair, stuffed, and watched him through the tall kitchen windows. He checked his watch as he climbed into his Nissan and I was suddenly reminded of Nick. God how he looked so much like our dad. Brown hair, brown eyes, height, voice, everything was just like him. I looked away, ignoring the pang that went through my chest at losing my best friend and brother.
"See ya' later Mom." I said, kissing her on the cheek, then heading out with my stuff and keys.
••
"Did you get the place?" Stacy asked me as we headed to lunch.
I nodded, sliding my notebook into my bag. "I'm supposed to go up to New York next week for it." I said as I grinned at her. I'd been waiting forever for the head journalist place, and I'd finally got it.
She beamed. "That's great Kace!" She squealed. She started dancing, but I pulled her to the cafeteria before she got started.
Stacy Mirëz was my best friend. And the only one who convinced me to go shopping. I went with her just to make her happy. She was a leggy brunette with an attitude if you tried to control her. She was anything but controlled. She was hilarious in a way that made her look stupid, but everyone loved her for that. She was different, and she embraced it.
I, on the other hand, was completely different. I played football and baseball, I was a journalist, and I listened when told, to a certain point at least. I wasn't exactly funny, but, everyone knew me. How? I don't know. I could just walk down the hallway, and everyone would say my name. Stacy always told me it was because I was hot. But I fail to see what she meant. I was average. Dusty blonde hair, blue eyes.. See? Average. I always thought it was because of Nick. He was a bad boy that EVERYONE knew and loved. He probably rubbed popularity off on me, because we were never not together. We would be seen every second of the day together, doing everything that way. I let out a breath.
The lunchroom was full, and our table was the usual. Filled with the football team, and Stacy's girlfriends. I took a seat between Johnny, the running back and Sean, the kicker.
"Hey man." Johnny said as he stuffed his face. I didn't exactly enjoy the lunch here, so I just chilled and talked the whole time.
"Hey." I said, leaning back in my seat.
"Did you get it?" He asked.
I nodded and ran my hands though my hair. "Finally." I sighed.
Suddenly I heard shouting and we all turned our heads to see Bryce Samuels, the bully of the school, picking up a small kid. And by the hollers Bryce was emitting, this kid was gay. That flipped on a switch as Bryce slammed the kid against the wall. I shoved myself up and stormed towards him. I always had a soft spot for gays. I mean, Nick was gay. I ignored the pang once again. Bryce had his back to me, but I tapped on his shoulder. He turned around slowly, his hand still in the air. He looked me over then dropped the kid, turning his body towards me.
"Hey, fag." He said, smirking.
I blinked. Who the hell was he calling a fag?
"Oh, don't be confused, everyone knows your rich big bro is gay." He smiled at me, and it wasn't attractive one bit. "And you know what they say about having a gay brother." He went to punch me, but I was already there, my fist connecting strongly with his jaw. He hollered out in pain and fury, then he tackled me to the ground and we hit the floor, hard. He went to punch me, but I grabbed his fist and twisted it back, then kneed him in the crotch, drawing out a strangled groan from a lot of the guys in the cafeteria. I saw then that everyone was watching us, even a few teachers. I pinned him down and punched him over and over, blood staining my knuckles and fingers.
"Don't you ever talk about my brother like that again." I growled in his ear, then stood just as Mr. Stanley came zooming towards us through the crowd. The principal looked at us, then sighed. He went to help Bryce up, but he smacked his hand away. I rolled my eyes. Typical dick. He rubbed blood off of his face, and followed behind me as Mr. Stanley ordered us to go the office.
No body talked about Nicholas Dean Anderson like that. No body.
