5: Dear Recovery

Pain.

That was all she felt.

"Glad to see your awake Ms. Montoya, I'm Haley, I'm gonna be your nurse along with Nurse Jaycee who you'll meet tonight! You've got a great group of friends, they were here since you got brought in, and came back once their shift was over. Anyway you feeling up to some visitors?" Nurse Haley asks the girl hanging a new IV bag.

"Sofia, I need to check on Sofia! Where's Sofia? Where's my phone" Avarie asks trying to get out of the hospital bed.

"Hey let's calm down, I'll go grab your belongings and your visitors, does that sound good" the nurse asks the girl who nods in response as the nurse helps get her resettled in the hospital bed.

"Hey how's my favorite dispatcher" Evan says walking into Avaries hospital room, earning a punch in the shoulder from Maddie.

"Hey" Sofia says shoving past Evan and heading straight for Avarie gently embracing her in a hug "Talon is in a room down the hall, he says hi, and that he's glad your ok, I thought you were at the dorm"

"I had homework so I went to the library, and I thought you guys were in the dining hall" Avarie asks confused.

"Reports are it was a coordinated attack, multiple buildings were hit, the library, the dining hall and the student health center" Maddie says grabbing Avaries free hand.

"Well that's a lot to process" Avarie mumbles.

"Yeah I thought you were at the dorm otherwise I would've called, only found out cause an officer stopped by to talk to Talon. Athena walked in to speak to him and saw us" Sophia say before a delivery guy walks in with flowers.

"Who are they from" Avarie asks as Maddie grabs the card off the flowers and hands it to her.

She opens it and it reads

My daughter, I love you! Glad your okay. Will see you real soon!- love dad.

"Throw them away" Avarie says ripping up the card into small pieces, curling up into a ball.

"What's wrong" Evan asks grabbing the girls pale hand.

"Nothing, I don't wanna talk about it" Avarie says scooting over for him to sit beside her.

"I'm going to go back to Talon. I love you I will come check up on you later" Sofia says kissing Avarie on the forehead and leaving.

"I'm going to shower and get some rest I'll stop by tomorrow with breakfast" Maddie says bidding the duo a farewell. "Text me if you need anything, anything at all. I mean it"

"Ok love you" Avarie replies yawning and snuggling into Evans side as Maddie leaves the room leaving the duo in a comfortable silence. "Your really warm"

"You scared me" Evan mumbles.

"I know and I'm sorry" the girl replies meekly.

The door to the room opens slowly.

"You didn't think you could get out of teaching me to ice skate that easily did you?" Christopher says sitting down in the chair beside the bed.

"He wouldn't let me take him home until he made sure you were ok" Eddie says leaning against the chair his son was in ruffling the boys hair.

"How bout this bud. Once they release me from this prison, we'll go ice skating" Avarie says looking at Eddie who nods his head.

"Finally, you agree" Christopher squeals setting down a picture on the bed. "I drew this for you"

"Is that me ice skating" Avarie says holding it up, and showing it to Buck.

"Yes, do you like it" Christopher asks.

"I love it, it's gonna go on my fridge" Avarie replies handing it to Buck to put somewhere safe.

"I brought you and Buck dinner" Athena says pushing the door open and walking into the room with a takeout bag, Bobby behinds her with balloons and flowers.

"Oh my god" Avarie laughs as Bobby tries to untangle the massive amount of balloons.

"Hey bud let's let them eat and Avarie get some rest, we can stop by after school tomorrow" Eddie says as Christopher nods.

"I'm glad you didn't die, see you tomorrow" Christopher whispers when he leans down to give the girl a hug.

"Love ya bud" she replies a tear falling down her face. In the week she has known them, Christopher has grown on her. His innocence to the world and how cruel it can be, made her want to do anything to protect him.

"So how you feeling" Athena asks her and Bobby moving the couch to beside the bed so they could both sit next to each other as they all ate.

Avarie fidgets with her hospital gown, thinking.

"I'm doing ok, tired, everything hurts" Avarie mumbles picking at the burger they brought her. "I have no appetite"

"Hey I have a reporter out here" Nurse Haley says sticking her head into the room.

"Tell them I have no comment, and that's the answer for any others that come" Avarie says before taking a sip of the Dr. Pepper they brought her, the nurse slipping her head back into the hallway.

"You are a hero, the kid in the hallway, he's down the hall, stable, awake and alert, his family gets to see there son alive today because of you" Bobby says with a reassuring smile.

"Your like the dad I needed but didn't get" Avarie says Bobby's hand in hers.

"She won't take no for an answer" Nurse Haley says coming back in.

"Who is it" Avarie asks sitting up in the bed.

"Her names Taylor Kelly" Nurse Haley replies getting looks from the group, minus the girl in the hospital bed.

"Am I missing something" Avarie asks.

"We saved her from a helicopter, and now she chases big stories" Bobby says rolling his eyes.

"I can get rid of her if you want" Athena says with enthusiasm.

"Please, if I want my story told I'll tell it myself" Avarie pleads, yawning "dude im so tired"

"Why don't you get some rest and we'll come see you tomorrow" Bobby says as he and Athena get up gathering their things.

"Thanks for dinner" Buck says smiling.

"Anytime" Athena says kissing Avaries head before leaving with Bobby.

"You don't have to stay" Avarie says as she turns away from Buck.

"Yeah, your not getting rid of me that easy" he replies tossing a blanket over the two of them before pulling Avarie back towards him. "Now I'm cold so give me your body heat"
