Cole POV
I woke up in the living room of the monastery, with a peaceful feeling. The last thing I remembered was the hospital crumbling, and just hoping I wasn't gonna die. I guess I didn't. I was wrapped in my blanket, the one Kai loved, on the armchair. Wait. Kai! As my heart thumped from worry, my eyes frantically searched the room, and then landed on him. Kai was on the couch, shivering from the fan above. Thank goodness, I thought, exhaling with relief. I got up and placed my blanket around him. At least he was breathing. I went to my room and picked up the book I was reading before the whole ordeal. I stuck the book on the counter and decided to make hot chocolate. As I started making my drink, I thought about what happened. In the past weeks, Kai and I have been thrust into near-death situations and yet, we managed to show our true feelings.
"Ow..." I heard from the couch.
"Kai!" I rushed to him, holding the hot chocolate and setting it on the coffee table. "How are you feeling?"
Kai clutched his head and grimaced. "Like I just got twelve brainfreezes all at once."
"So you're feeling great," I laughed. "Here," I handed him the hot chocolate. "This might help."
"Thanks." Kai sipped the hot chocolate. He didn't know, but every time I made hot chocolate, I always made his a little warmer. As I sat down next to him on the couch, I continued my book.
After an hour or so, Kai had fallen asleep and his head was resting on my shoulder. I looked down at him, feeling more at peace than I even remembered. Then I heard people walk in. The first to return was Nya, who silently crept behind the couch and grabbed Kai into a bear hug. He screamed awake and Nya recoiled, seeing us on the couch together. "Whoops. Did I... interrupt something?"
Kai rolled his eyes, winked at me, and jumped over the couch and started tickling Nya. Out of fear of staining the carpet, I took the mugs to the counter. As the rest of the ninja arrived and watched the show, I picked up the book. There felt like something was inside it. Huh. I coulda sworn there wasn't something in here before. I opened it and saw a black tulip pressed into the pages. A message, a reminder. That love perseveres, through death and through curses. Not ghosts nor oni could stop us. Ever. I placed the book down and started laughing along.
Finally, I could relax.
