Chapter 5: Second Winds

Cole POV
When Nya, Zane, and I returned home, Zane immediately went to cook us a good breakfast. "How is he," Zane asked.
"He's still unconscious. However, the hospital staff told us they might be able to make a cure from the poison. We're just waiting now."
Nya sighed. "Where is everyone?"
"They are all out. Shall I call them back?"
"Sure," I muttered. I was so tired. Zane handed Nya and I both a plate of eggs and toast. "Thank you."
"No problem. I'll go ahead and call Sensei home."
As we ate, I looked at my phone. I scrolled through all my contacts. Skylor, the ninja, Misako, Wu... the group chat. I smiled. Then I saw Zane texting on it.

BRBE❄️: Cole and Nya have returned with news on a cure.
Sensei: Will be heading back now
BlueBird⚡️: Is Nya ok?
WaterLily🪷: Yup
BlueBird⚡️: cool
          Rocky: Is Lloyd with u?
Green Gogurt: Of course
         Rocky: Cool, just ✅ing

I put my phone back in my pocket and waited for the others to return.
When Wu and the ninja came back, Nya and I filled them in. Then the house phone began ringing. I picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hello, uh, is this...Cole?"
"Yeah, why?" I looked to the group, who was confused.
"Uh...your friend's awake." I dropped the phone.
"What!" Nya demanded.
"Kai's awake. Let's go!"
We rushed to the hospital, where we saw Kai sitting up in his bed. "Hey guys!"
"Kai!" Nya tackled him for a bear hug. "Are you okay? How'd you wake up?"
"I dunno," he shrugged. "It just happened."
I pulled up a chair. "How are you feeling? What was the last thing you remember?"
Kai squinted. "Uh... all I remember is vomiting violently, then... then blacking out."
Dang it, he didn't remember the whole hand-face thing.
The same nurse walked into the room. "He can be discharged tomorrow, we just need to keep an eye on him. We don't know why he woke up, so we'd like to keep tabs on him if anything happens."
"Of course," Wu said. "When you get out, we'll go have noodles at Skylor's, yeah?"
Kai's face lit up. "Awesome!" I smiled. He was feeling better.
~~The next day~~
We all were so happy Kai was finally out of the hospital; all of us were worried that we wouldn't find a cure. And how did he wake up? A question for later. We took him out for noodles at Skylor's place. He seemed eager to see her, we hadn't even told her about the whole... thing. As Kai was scarfing down noodles, Skylor was chatting with the group. When we were done eating, Kai stood up.
"My dear friends and family, I'd like to make a confession." Uh oh. What could this possibly be?
"I'd like to take Skylor on a date." I choked. Not what I was expecting. I thought it'd be more serious.
"Kai," Lloyd started. "You don't need to tell us beforehand."
Skylor grabbed Kai's hand. "I'd love to."
That night, I kept thinking about how abrupt that whole deal was.  Why? I lifted my hand to see a drawing of Skylor, with dark and ominous colors around her face. I didn't like how spooky it was making her seem, so I ripped it out and threw it in my trashcan. I finally skipped to the next song, Angel With a Shotgun by The Cab, and turned my lights off.
