Chapter Three~ Telling Tails
Someone nudged me awake. I sighed and kept my eyes closed. My eyelids are heavy. I'm still tired. It's probably super early. I'm not waking up.
Surprisingly, the plane seats are real comfortable so it makes it easy to fall asleep.
"Riiiver! Come on baby Riv!" Somebody shook me awake. I ignore them.
"River, seriously though." They say again. I groan.
The person sighs and the plane shifts its gears and that's scary enough to wake me up. "We're here, Sleeping Beauty." Harley said monotonously, throwing me my bags. I shook my head. I am almost positive that my makeup is smeared.
"You fell asleep listening to that song again." Dad replied as soon as I stood up and stretched. I shrugged. He's talking about my life in a song, the life he barely knows about. I would tell him about all the cannons going off at once in my head, but I can;t just say, "hey Dad, I have really bad depression and anxiety and I cut myself. Oh, and don't worry, the scars aren't on my wrist where everyone can see, they're on my stomach." It'll be too weird.
He'll put me in a mental hospital for that.
We step outside of the plane. A wave of hot flashes in my veins.
Australia is hot.
Hot hot hot!
My palms are sweating from the amount of people around me, taking up the majority of the air. I need air. I need air.
I breathe in and out a couple times before some jerk runs past me to his buddies. I'm just as invisible here as I was back at Boston. Nothing's changed so far.
Good.
My dad lets out a loud, "WHEW!" While he grabs all of our suitcases. I chose not to bring a lot, it'll bring back memories.
I mean, I want the memories, but they always seem to come back as bad.
I sigh. I'm flustered. I'm tired. I, I, I. Me, myself, and I; that's all there seems to be.
But I'm not real.
I'm probably a ghost... yes. I'm a ghost floaitng through the airport with my brother and Dad. They see me. They're the only ones who can.
Well, that's what I thought until some kids started to stare.
I wish I was a ghost.
We got outside and Dad hauled a cab guy on the curb. He mentioned something about Glenroy and the numbers 403 before we were forced to go inside the car. Harley and I relunctantly agreed after we put our bags in the trunk and the front of the cab.
Harley opened the door for me and I exhaled a giggle. "After you, m'lady." He properly held out his hand. "Why thank you, kind sir!" I took it hand he guided me inside.
"That's... 44?" He asked. I shrugged and fully stepped inside. Dad laughed and joined us on the other side so I'm caught in the middle even though this cab is a mini van. "Why don't you talk to the cab driver about Luke and the rest of those mousekians." Dad laughed, tapping the driver on the shoulder.
"First of all, it's the Janoskians, and second of all, I doubt she'll know them." Harley corrected, saving me. I nodded and faced Dad. He sighed.
"Yes?" The cab driver asked. "Oh, it's nothing." Dad replied. "Oh- wait, aren't you that Harley boy from that video site?" He asked. Harley looked around and nodded.
The guy laughed and told him all sorts of things about how his daughters are obsessed over him and how his dogs bark every time Harley "tries" to sing, but I think Harley can sing quite well. Harley laughed with each story he man offered until an hour passed and we got to our house.
I looked outside the window and realized of how awkward it has to be to drive on the opposite side of the road for Dad and Harley; I can't drive... yet. I'm planning on driving by senior year but I doubt I can even drive. I haven't driven before so this should be interesting.
We stepped outside of the cab and Dad handed the cab guy a bill. It wasn't one of the U.S. bills, but it was some different colored, and cool, bills that Australia had.
It was still hot and humid. "Opposite seasons will get to ya." Harley noted to me, fanning himself with his beanie. I nodded and checked my phone. "Service Out Of Range" it read on the top of my phone.
"You should seriously get an iPhone, they work better and they take better videos. Plus, we could group chat with random people we meet here! Or we could FaceTime when we graduate and-" "Slow down, kiddo." I ruffled up his hair. He pouted out his lip and stuck up tongue out at me. I just smiled at his childish behavior.
"Quit fooling around and help me with the boxes, kids!" Dad carried a big box and let out a huff of air. Looks like he's not too pleased with the weather himself.
A dog barked. Harley and I turned around at the same time. A white dog was on a leash, being walked by a boy. I giggled like a little child and waved to the dog. The boy seemed to of thought that I was waving to him so he waved to me. It was an awkward eye contact situation.
Harley nudged me and waved to the boy himself. "Are ya the new neighbors?" The heavy Australian accented boy started to walk over to us.
I recognized him.
"I'm Beau, I live across the street." He explained.
I froze up, the weather no match for my instincts. Beau faced me and held out his hand for a firm shake. My heart is in my throat. My palms are sweating.
I smile and look down while shaking his hand, still holding in the majority of my breath, barely letting any escape.
His big hand engulfed mine as he shook it sternly. I just let him take over.
"I'm Harley and this is my sister River. We're new here." Harley covered for me. I sighed to let out a breath of release.
"Nice to meet you two. I would help, but I've got to take my stupid dog out for a walk, isn't that right, Lala?" Beau petted the dog.
Harley laughed. I just want to pet the dog, but it would be sort of embarrassing to even look at him. What if he tells his brothers, or the rest of the band, about us? What if he thinks I'm the ugliest creature out there? I probably am...
"Stop thinking about What If's, Riv" Harley whispered to me. I looked at him and nodded. "Well, it was nice meeting you, but we sh-" "Wait, aren't you that YouTube guy?" Beau cut Harley off short.
I looked at Harley, how does he know about him? "Uh, yeah." Harley laughed nervously. He isn't that popular, how?
"And you're his sister! Man, Luke and Jai would love to see you! They have not shut up about you. Isn't your name Dianna or something like that?" Beau asked.
"River." I corrected him with a huge grin plastered onto my face. He has to be lying, Luke and Jai would want nothing to do with me. I know it.
"We should get back to our dad, he's going to be extremely mad if we don't help him. River and I will be by later for sure!" Harley yelled back as we walked up the steps to our new house.
"What time?" Beau yelled back.
Harley checked his phone, 6:12. "Around 8 or something, is that alright?" Harley asked.
Beau nodded and waved goodbye while he stared at me.
"Come on, let's go help Dad out." I dragged Harley with me. "46!"
