y/n's head pounded something terrible. her mouth twitched downwards as she came to, itching to move her fingers. the world around her was circling with a dark and dreary odor. she fought and struggled, willing with all her force for her eyes to open.

and then they did, fluttering open as light as a feather.

"lumos!"

y/n's arm swung in front of her face to shield her eyes from the physically blinding light. she murmured. and then she shouted,

"MERLIN! turn the light off, I'll be practically blind if you keep going."

"I've done it!" ron shouted, "I've woken her up!"

"the only thing you've woken up is her temper," george joked. his twin elbowed him softly, telling him off—except he giggled beneath his smile, and so george simply smirked.

"ron. ronald weasley." a pause. "the light! for crying out loud, turn it off before I strangle you!"

the young ginger looked down to his wand and his eyes widened. "r-right." he cleared his throat as clammy hands gripped the wand tighter. "nox." after dimming his wand, y/n could clearly make out her surroundings. lee outstretched a hand for her to take and she gladly accepted it, hauling herself back up onto the train seat.

the compartment's door creaked open, sliding back as brunette locks peeked through the doorway.

"everyone alright in here?" familiar and homey. y/n stilled, her body dazed and weak. lee poked at her.

"not too sure," the boy said. "our friend looks a bit pale. she just got attacked by-"

"lupin," y/n murmured. her eyes darted towards his figure. it was him. her eyebrows upturned solemnly. "I think I might faint. I'm seeing things."

ron's head whipped around to glare at her. "how do you know his name?"

"y/n." the brunette visibly softened. "you look so..." lupin trailed off, distracted as the girl shot up and embraced him quickly. the man immediately wrapped his arms around her figure, squeezing gently. y/n pressed her face into his shoulder, her nose squished against the pine scent of his coat. lupin gave a light pat to her back before pulling away. "you've grown so much since I last saw you."

y/n's lips curled into a warm grin. "and your hair has become a nesting place for rats."

"and you've also learned to talk back. lovely."

"y/n was attacked by dementors," fred finished for lee. "just her. all of us are okay."

lupin frowned. "alright. not frightening at all." he cleared his throat and stepped into the hall. "trolley!" he shouted. a loud rumbling came down the hall and lupin fixated his attention back to the kids. "get her some food. make sure harry eats his chocolate. I'll be checking up on the others."

y/n's tongue pressed against the tips of her teeth as lupin walked off, her lips pursing. she wanted to say something. to ask something, anything. but it was too risky with her friends around. besides, they'd see each other again. she wasn't sure why he was on the train, but that's got to mean something.

the trolley rattled, boiling over as it stopped. per lupin's request, she stepped up to it. as y/n picked out a few treats from the trolley, the weasley twins turned to ron and harry in disbelief.

"who is that?" they asked simultaneously.

"lupin," ron scoffed obviously. "did you not just hear y/n say his name? lupin? are you both deaf?"

george swatted him off. "no, you dung! we know that."

"it's more of a 'how does he know y/n' question," fred added.
